Pros: costume, special effects, casting and directing
Cons: format

Egg of Life simply put, is a female version of Igodo which in turn is also a borrow from Oke Langbodo.

The son of the Igwe is afflicted by a strange illness. The only remedy is a trip into the evil forest by...oh...oh...nubile girls (and not their male counterparts) who must battle and conquer the forces of darkness to get the fabled Egg of Life.

The modern day amazons jettison their feminine chores back in the village to take the role of warriors-since that is the will of the gods!
They, amidst preparations by the chief priestess, go into the evil forest, the land of the living dead. The land, according to her, "where nothing is as it seems."

There, in that evil place, begins the adventures. Predictably, they are from the imaginable to the unthinkable. But in retelling the story, in another vein, Andy Amenechi (Mortal Inheritance), the award-winning director, relies on drama and special effects. Of course, he has the likes of Kabat Esosa Egbon (The Return, True love), a very good screen player and director of note too, to work with.

Add this to the money flowing from the pockets of Ojiofor Ezeanyaneche, the popular executive producer/marketer, better known as O.J.Productions. What you get is enough incentives to excel in costumes, makeup, location, casting, set and design; as well as other areas that makes a movie tick.

The movie also excels through the use of a simple device known as curiosity-curiosity to know how these tested, pretty actresses will carry out their roles and how they will beat the likes of Sam Dede, Norbert Young, Chidi Mokeme, Charles Okafor and the others who shone in Igodo.
Yes, they say that what a man can do, a woman can do better. And perhaps that is what the ladies set out to do by screaming, shrieking and shivering in fright; more than the men. Just joking though!

One classical device, Andy uses and employs well,is the part where Georgina sustains an injury, hides it from Nkiru, only to die after completing her mission. This is why movies like Marco Polo, starring Chou Kwan Chou, Ti Long, Chen Shin, Wang Yu, Gladiator (Russell Crowe, Djimon Houssou) and Sholay (Amitabh Bachan, Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Sanjeev Kumar, Amjad Khan), remain evergreen.

As one watches the locations used, one gets a feeling of deja vu. This is because the locations used are akin to that of Igodo. The effect of the special effects is very real. The use of negatives to depict the scenes of the spirits is well done. In this way, the effects are able to compliment the makeup.
Egg of Life is a commendable venture in the annals of filmmaking in Nollywood. O.J.Productions should be given kudos for scoring another first. Remember, it was his Igodo that marked the beginning of the reign of movies with traditional settings erroneuosly referred to as epics by those who don't know!

Nollywood is gradually shifting back to this kind of genre; in the likes of Oja Dike, Queen, etc.
This and other Nigerian contemporary stories,(indigenous to Nigeria), should be the focus of Nollywood. This will be one of the ways in which Nollywood can survive and hold her own in comity of serious movie making countries in the world.
Imagine that a movie like Egg of Life should be on celluliod and entered into the Cannes Film Festival in France? Why wouldn't the world be awed and brought over with a movie like this. Rich in Nigerian nay African culture?

One can only wish that several marketers can get together to produce a flick like Egg of life, that may well turn out to be the egg of Nollywood!

Pros: i loved the concept, the plot
Cons: production weaknesses

I enjoyed this film. I was slightly disturbed by the quality of the picture, as I am American and movie images are generally much clearer. The only other thing that bothered me about the film was that the women may have overracted certain sequences a bit (i.e. they would shake uncontrollably a lot.) Overall, the movie was entertaining, but I do find fault with the CGI, and a large part of that may be due to having grown up in America, where movies are more advanced as far as cinematography, materials, and budgets. I have seen several Nigerian movies and enjoyed most of them, and only wish that there was some way that I could help improve upon the production weaknesses.
Likely, changing format would help the problems with image quality immensely. For instance, I was told (and I'm not sure if this is true) that the movies are in VCD opposed to DVD. That may account for the difference, and I don't know if the movies are shot on digital, film, or what format. Digital (DV) is a cheap and easy format that would capture the essence of the story without compromising the integrity of the images. But I don't know what the budgets are like as opposed to independant US films.

Okay, that's my take. I recommend the film (even though I wanted to woman who died at the end to be the one who survived).

I love you all. AR
