Description:

Another Bruce Willis super hero movie. This time, Captain America is leading a band of US Special Ops commandos to rescue the usual damsels in distress from the clutches of the Nigerian rebels – yeah, supposedly during the Civil War. An otherwise brilliant director working with an illiterate script based on a silly premise.

Pros:

It wasn't shot in Nigeria
|
|
Cons:
|
It didn't feature Nigerians
|

The first time the map of Nigeria appears in an American movie, it is because Superman is coming to rescue our sick asses. A Bruce Willis story using the backdrop of a mythical coup during Nigerian Civil War as a setting for a rescue story. Like many Nigerians who have seen it, I thought it was the typical silly Hollywood treatment of themes non-American. Willis probably wanted to do something exotic, so he went to Africa. I mean he's been everywhere else!
A depressing little movie that fuels the propaganda of the white man saving the stupid Nigerians from themselves. Throw in some mutilated limbs and orphaned kinds for color. I mean the shots of heroic American soldiers carrying children is always so awe-inspiring. Check out the CNN visuals of Baghdad falling.
And the soldiers look like they have never seen the attrocities of war (as portrayed in the movie) before. We have a clear idea how much they have done in their time.
A handful of pidgin and some clicheic hausa - oh, and since it is Willis, the rescued doctor has to fall in love with him.
Our movie-makers should counter this sort of inane protrayal by writing stories about the corrupt officials at the US Embassies around the world. Mention the corrupt company and government officials in the US in your stories too. To paraphrase something I heard elsewhere, this is an idiotic story wrapped in a moronic movie.

[color:blue]If people rate this movie and say that they hate it, I don't blame them. If they claim they writer ridicule Nigeria as whole or the movie dis-figure what Nigeria is really is I think the could never be wrong.
But, let's us all take a minute to look at this movie from the perspective of a foreigner, I guarantte that we will all the this was a JOB WELL DONE. Are gonna deny that the story is not true when people faces even worst daily. I might not know detail of previous war that occur in Nigeria, but am no baby, and am old enough to learn a thing or two about my beloved country; Nigeria.
Tears of the Sun was great, nice movie, breath taking, and a nice touch of surprise. When the movie came out on DVD, I bought one copy for myself and one for my uncle, because it was that good.[/color]

Pros:
|
That America at least thought of Nigeria for the storyline.
|
|
Cons:
|
That Americans chose to add Nigeria as part of the storyline for a movie that was ignorant demeaning.
|
|
The movie just sucks. It made me angry that I live in America. The way they portrayed Nigerians in that movie: as stupid, ruthless animals who are no match for the "almighty and all powerful" American army. The ending was just stupid the way they basically nuked the Nigerian soldiers one time, killing them like ants. The love story annoyed me. Who the hell has time to flirt when there are bullets, bombs and shells flying over your head in a war zone! In short, there was nothing I liked about this movie. Don't waste your time seeing it!

Tears of the Suns is based on the Biafran/Nigerian civil war, which took place between 1967-1970.
The film would have been a well-made wartime love story if it were fictitious. Nevertheless, what Antoine Fuqua failed to realise is that you cannot fictionalise actuality especially when the subject matter is something so sensitive as the Nigeria/Biafra war.
The Nigeria/Biafra war is a very sensitive subject to talk about in present day Nigeria because the war left a huge scare on the flesh of Nigerian government and her allies who participated directly or indirectly in the systematic starvation and indiscriminate killing of over three million non-combatant Biafran women and children.
Antoine Fuqua failed to consider various significant factors whilst making the film.
1.In the entire 121 minutes of Tears of the Sun, the genocide carried out by the Nigerian soldiers against the Biafran people was never represented or shown. Every film made so far about the Jews all show what they went through during the World War. Why not the Biafrans?
2. Why did the film constantly refer to the Nigerian soldiers as rebels when we all know that they are the one with the British and American governments support.
3.why did Antoine Fuqua persistently refer to over twenty million Biafran people as “ethnic tribe”? Would he have possibly referred to the Republic of Ireland, Norway, Denmark or Malta whose populations are known to be less than five millions as “mere ethnic groups”?
4. If the film was a true representation of “some aspects of the war” as claimed by Fuqua, why did he dedicate the entire film to a love story between two white Americans?
What the film did was to find a common ground which would appeal to the American filmgoers and at the same time appease the Nigerian government. The American filmgoers after the event of September 11th want to see their “heroes” saving the world in another “rogue” country. In the other hand, the Nigerian government ever since the war ends are doing everything they could to expurgate what actually took place during the three-year war to the outside world.
It is either Antoine Fuqua failed to research the truth about the Nigeria/Biafra war or he willingly connived with the Nigerian government to distort the truth. Whichever one should be the case; Tears of the Sun is a mere fictitious wartime drama rather than a true representation of the Nigerian/Biafran war.

Pros:

Production value...of course, it's a hollywood production.
|
|
Cons:
|
The story, plot and accuracy of the movie is garbage.
|
|
I won't take away anything from the production, it's top rated. My beef is with the story they told, which is just false. Earlier posts, have already made mention to these, and I agree with them.
And why shoot the film in Hawaii? They didn't even have the decency to shoot it in Africa. What an insult.
I'm giving up my pursuit of Hollywood for Nollywood. If all goes well, we will be shooting Finding Ola, an action/thriller both in the US and in Nigeria very soon.
It's quite an ambitious project for a Nollywood movie, but I truly believe, I have more to gain, going back to Nigeria to contribute my bit, than struggle to make movies here in the US. My company is still brand new.
