While i very much understand the current trend of making movies in 2 or 3 parts,i neither understand nor agree to the way it is being done.
In other parts of the world(ex.hollywood)where movies do have sequels,the general trend is to have the first part finish with a closure of the story,but with a small window opened for a possible follow up.This ofcourse demands the use of a completely new script for the follow up/s.
But in the case of naija movies,a single script that is meant to tell a 100 minutes story is stretched to say 200 minutes to enable a second part to be squeezed out of it.
Now there is nothing wrong in telling a story for that lenght of time,but the storyteller would have to have a lot of things to tell for that kind of running time or else he/she will just bore the audience to death,and this is exactly the problem with these naija movies that come in parts.
They do not have enough contents to fill two parts,so they end up overstretching scenes and pacing the whole plot so slow that the audience looses interest before they get to the second part(it has happened to me quite a few times)
So my question is,is it not defeating the original purpose of making people buy 2 parts of the same story instead of one by boring them to death even before the first part ends due to the slowpacing tricks used by the moviemakers,and therefore making the viewers loose interest in the other part?
I have no idea when in the production chain,it is decided whether a movie must be in more than one part in naija,but in my opinion as a scriptwriter it has to be made clear right at the conceptualization of the story itself.
A normal script and movie tells it's story in a maximum time of about 120 minutes,but if it has to run a lot longer than that,then it must have enough contents to fill that space or else it is all a waste of everybody's time and money.
One always have the feeling that a lot of these naija scripts are meant to be told once,but the decision to stretch them always come later just to maximise profits,hence a lot of overstretched scenes and sequences as well as pointless,and to the plot,irrelevant scenes/sequences that we see in our movies.
As a scripter,i decide very early how long my story will be and i just endeavour from then on to get me enough materials and contents to fill that lenght of time.I decide very early in what pace to tell the story because i don't want to end up boring the reader.
The last thing a storyteller wants is to bore his audience to death and that is exactly what a lot of our moviemakers are doing at the moment.But one thing is certain,this is not a good way of telling stories and it does more harm than good to our storytelling culture.
I do however believe that the average naija scriptwriters are not to be blamed, because once their scripts are out of their hands,they don't have a say in how the script will be subsequently treated.
That power lies in the hands of the producers.
