Thumbs down Police sergeant shot on duty: I’m dying!

Wednesday, July 23, 2008

May 27, 2008 was like a normal working day for Police Sergeant Cyril Ajiofor. That morning, the 36-year- old said his usual morning prayer with his wife, Angela, and bade her goodbye, promising to return home earlier than before.

But that promise was not fulfilled. Instead of coming back home, the police sergeant actually ended up at Orthopaedic hospital in Ikeja, Lagos.

Ajiofor was not in the hospital because he had fever or any other ailment. He was shot on both legs by rampaging armed robbers who accosted his patrol team at a black spot at Meiran area.

The police sergeant, who claimed to have put in 18 years in the Force wants the Inspector General of Police, Sir Mike Okiro, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Marvel Akpoyibo, and other well meaning Nigerians to come to his aid.

"I want, most especially, my IG, Sir Mike Okiro, who I know is a God-fearing man to assist me before it would be too late. As I am talking to you, I am dying minute by minute. I am in serious agony. I need to go for surgery to correct the legs, so that I can walk", he told Daily Sun.

The robbers were in an unidentified vehicle when they suddenly opened fire on the police team, wounding Ajiofor seriously.

Ajiofor, who spoke with Daily Sun on his sick bed at his residence, the Iponri Police Barracks lamented that he could no longer afford his medical bill and had to discharge himself from the hospital.

The law enforcement officer, who is also a lawyer, said: "I am now at the mercy of death. I am right now waiting to die at home as I can no longer afford my medical bill. The only person that has been assisting me is my Divisional Police Officer (DPO). But the man is tired too. The doctor warned that I should be fast with the operation and that is why I am shouting and begging the IG, Lagos CP and all Nigerians to come to my aid."

He also appealed to the Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), to come to his rescue.

Hear him: "I know that the amiable and generous governor is not aware of what is happening to me. I know that he would have assisted me. Please, sir, I need your assistance."

He thanked his pastor, Chris Mba of Believers Heritage Church and Pastor Chris Ossai of Touch Bearer and the Ezixhi Social Club for the assistance rendered to him.
