Whoo! Cool. I love Thandie newton. She can't play ANY role. Can't wait to see Good Deeds.
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's book Half of A Yellow Sun is being made into a movie. Shooting starts in March, 2012 in Nigeria with actors Chiwetal Ejiofor, Thandie Newton and Dominic Cooper (I heard from another source that Sophie Okenedo will also be joining the cast).
A movie "insider" I follow on Twitter, mentioned that members of the film crew are already in Nigeria.
I am really excited about this movie and wish the cast and crew the very best.
Here is an article from Cinema Blend that talks of the movie (Sophie Okenedo is not mentioned in this article):

All I know is that when politicians go into government they look like the he-goat which has just finished a cross-country trek to the city market, but when they reach mid-term they are like the show horse in the emir's palace.
I do hope they use some of our Nollywood actors o!

Only the ones that can ACTUALLY act o...preferably, the old ones and some new faces. Oh this is good. But according to the site:
That writer needs to do some research sha.Financing for playwright turned director Biye Bandele's Half of a Yellow Sun has been finalized
This is better.Currently Biyi Bandele is working — among many other projects — on a film based on Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel ‘Half of a Yellow Sun’ (2006); a film which he has adapted from Adichie’s novel and which he will also direct. He explains his interest in the novel...

Brilliant news!!
I hear not one single Nollywood star is in it.

Do NOT quote me as what I'm saying here is an 'assumption' - I've not done any reading on the film or any research... having a lazy day!
If the production is NOT a 'Nollywood' production then they have absolutely no reason to use any Nollywood 'stars'. Their money, their business and they want maximum return hence known 'international' faces.
I guess their 'market' is the wider world, if that is the case why gamble on a nameless, faceless so called Nollywood 'star'.
I'm thinking Nigeria is just a 'location' for the shoot... that does not mean it's a Nigerian film or a Nigerian production. And if Nollywood doesn't like it then let them pull their finger out of their a** and quit the daft "I met a woman in a nightclub and fell in love, I must marry her... oh bummer she's my long-lost mom' storylines.
Been saying it for years... we have a zillion and one great literary works but 'Nollywood' is too damn lazy to make a good adaptation. Now some 'other person' wants to make something good we'll cry blue-murder?
But I guess there should be a ton of Nigerians in the film playing minor roles and extras... that's not too bad. Let the so-called stars apply for that now... if pride go gree them!
Anyone remember the 1990 film - Mister Johnson with Pierce Brosnan as the star? When I first saw that on TV in Lagos we first assumed it was a South African film as we were not really paying attention (during a festival and we were dealing with shaving a ram butt-naked lol). Then one of the girls said "Hey guys, this is Nigerian"... then we paid attention... 'Nollywood' didn't and has remained in the gutter for too long!
If only Ogunde still dey with us, all these jokers for don't stand up since!
Oh wow, that's good news. If Nollywood star want to be in the movie, then they have to get off their asses and audition or something. The producers are not obligated to use Nollywoodians even though the movie is being shut in naija. I'm finally excited about the possiblities...................................... ............

True it stings but we really are just mouth and no action... or at least no 'sensible' action. Question is "Is 'Nollywood" really that blind? Will we never see the huge opportunities we continually throw away? Oh well, better not to grow balls, take a risk and keep on churning out the rehashed crap Iya wey dey sell akara go buy!
No reason for Nigerians not to take the movie seriously... could give Nigerians 'good' ideas and make us look at the 'bigger' picture that has been sitting right in front of our eyes for donkey years... BUT I guess we might as well just take the easy option and moan & groan about it as usual. Shame!
VB, nothing prevents Nigerians from doing those things you mentioned if Nigerian actors are used. Afterall, it is a Nigerian tale. The project is a non-starter for me if it does not feature Nigerian performers in the cast.
And moreover, adaptations of classic literatures and novels are fairly common in yoruba language sector of Nollywood. So it is nothing new. It is only in the english speaking sector that the problem exists.

@ Bolded... Is the bigger picture!
The Yoruba language sector is IMHO way ahead of everyone else but not everyone understands the language or gets the 'sometimes odd' subtitles. When we open our eyes to the fact that there is more than just 'my village audience, my tribe audience or even my country audience' things might pick up. I could be wrong but it's what I think for now.
