The poster war is here again

Nigeria is one huge masquerade wrapped with posters. Elsewhere in the world, graffiti are the urban problem. In Nigeria posters are the greatest urban nuisances. The Pentecostal churches used to generate the greatest posters. Then we discovered an industry called Nollywood and the poster war took a different turn. Now you cannot make out which is a Nollywood face and which is the trendy preacher’s face as they stare at you side by side, sometimes with one peering from behind the other. Both the Nollywood and the televangelist poster faces are attractive and well fed.

Both faces want your money. Those eyes are peering at your pocket! You spend by buying Nollywood DVDs while you spend buying the preacher’s miracle! But of the three, the politician is the conman. The politicians’ posters have joined the war on the city murals. All over the cities, from Lagos to Owerri, the political posters have broken out like a bad measles. The Nollywood poster is pasted on top of the Pentecostal posters. The politician pastes his on top of the Nollywood. Then another politician comes along, tears off the other politician’s poster and pastes his on top. Another politician of a different political party tears off everyone else’s and plasters his on top. Then near the weekend, the preacher comes along and pastes over the politician and the Nollywood. If you are a hated party member, instructions may actually come from your own party to pull down your poster. And if you pasted in the territory of a strong opponent, you are guaranteed to find tar splashed all over your posters! A week ago, I noticed Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s posters all over Abuja. Information reaching me is that the Federal Capital Development Authority had a hectic week, ridding Abuja of the face of an anti-Third Termer! It is a constant war that gets hotter as we near Easter or Christmas.

These are seasons for both Pentecostal preachers and Nollywood. And we are hopefully nearing the 2007 magic. It is going to be starch on gum. Gum on glue. Glue on starch! Tar on all of the above. Then the rain will come and everything will be washed down and the cities will wear eczematous faces. Our politics became ridiculous since the politicians discovered posters as substitutes for campaigns. Issues died with the birth of posters. All we get from politicians these days are glossy posters and no issues. Posters don’t talk. They don’t advance issues. They only present the bust of the man with political ambition. It seems that what is important these days is for an aspirant to announce his or her ambition with glossy coloured posters. What else he stands for is not important. Often he stands for nothing, except that he wants to be remembered when it is time to share the booty! Sometimes, his poster is no more than a reminder to a serious candidate to buy him off or settle him; otherwise he becomes a nuisance to the candidate. Poster politics is another clever 419.

Who is concern?

Gov't that should be concern doesn't see it as a big deal. Their campaign or public anouncement should be limited to Radio and Television Media. I would have added Internet but this folks doesn't know more than Yahoo.com
