Nigeria storms Cannes in full force
Written by Fred Iwenjora
As if to correct the regular criticism that trail Nigeria whenever there is an international film festival and Nigeria film makers go without any films, Nigeria through the Nigeria Film Corporation seems to be in a fast catch-up mood as movie makers from Nollywood stormed the 61st edition of the Cannes International Film festival which began midweek with a complete stand
The Managing Director of the NFC, Mr Afolabi Adesanya led a team to set up the Nigeria stand at the festival and hosted international tourists, film enthusiasts from across the world.
Also the news of a Nigerian movie directed by Teco Benson, Mirror of Beauty going to Cannes also made great waves in Nigeria just as Eddie Ugboma’s Black Gold was also touted to have been entered for the festival.
Even though no one is sure for which category, Competition, Uncertain Regard or what, these films are featuring, the fact is clearer that Nigeria is getting better and the Nigerian stand at the festival is bubbling more than before.
Also at Cannes is Farouk Lasaki whose movie Changing Faces supported by the NFC is to screen at Cinema De Sud section, Ike Onuoha, Nigerian film maker based in the US whose film the Immigrant turned some heads at ZUMA 08 , Mahmoud Alli Balogun and a ost of others.
If the releases before the festival are anything to go by, then there is plan for Nollywood day at Cannes where discussions on piracy and funding will take center stage, screening of Nollywood movies will attract audience.
Afolabi Adesanya of NFC spoke to Home Video People in a telephone conversation and confirmed the fact that Nigeria’s stand has a better presence than in the past. He said he has hosted several international tourists at the stand.
