tru review
Well, I really didn't like this film for a few reasons. The storyline appears to be taken straight from Eddie Murphy's "Coming To America", so it didn't seem new and fresh. The story is very similar to Passion Of The Soul, Mumy's Daughter and Beyonce! (apparently the roles are just being reversed in terms of gender and the featured actors) Also, in the films I've viewed lately, I've noticed something...bad skin! And in this film, I really noticed it. Now Jackie Appiah is gorgeous, but I observed some skin blemishes on the upper part of her neck (as if on the bottom and side of her jaw). This did not look appealing, especially with some of the close-up shots. It may be due to the type of camera used during filming, digital cameras tend to pick up the most tiniest details.
The movie is directed by Lancelot Oduwa and stars Kofi Bucknor as King Prempeh, who seems to resemble a lion in the face (look at his eyes). Ecow Smith Asante gives an unusual performance in an unusual choice of role (it's my first time seeing him cast this way). Majid Michel gives another solid delivery, but I expected more of this film...so it's not totally on him (though he plays an eminent character in Pretty Queen). Actors must be very mindful of the roles they do & do not commit themselves to, particularly as they become more successful. Majid is cast as King Prempeh's son, Prince Nabiya, who is to wed the Empress (Jackie Appiah).
Vashti Jones has a significant to minor role in the film, and does a fine job.
Another thing, you may notice that throughout the entire film,Sanga Entertainment will be promoting their local and toll-free telephone numbers. They must figure Pretty Queen will be a big seller, and I would agree (but it may be due to prior work). The way the film ends there's bound to be a sequel, so part 3 & 4 should be out soon!
In closing, I would not recommend this film solely because the storyline has been done before and in much more interesting ways. Coming To America is a film I would recommend because it is much more entertaining, and though it released in the 80's...it's a certified classic! Hopefully the sequel to Pretty Queen will be much more innovating.
