I love this movie and i will watch it over and over again. I am really surprised at Shirley. I thought she was only good at organising boring Miss Ghana Pageants but with this one, she did it, she added some class to the movie. I love the Salsa scenes. I never knew Chris was a good Dancer. Bravo! Guys. Am only begging Brew Riverson Jnr to stop putting on that his Kente cap. Am sure with this Movie Atlakos would consider you guys for the good work. What do you think Sis?

Thumbs up Tru Review

Whelp, I sure hit the nail right on the head on this one. This film is most certainly inspired by the 1999 romantic comedy/drama The Best Man, which was written and directed by Spike Lee's cousin Malcolm D. Lee. It also resembles two other films released at that time, The Wood (1999) and The Brothers (2001). All three films were released as a male response to the phenomenal 1995 romance film Waiting to Exhale, which starred Whitney Houston, Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine, Lela Rochon and was directed by Forest Whitaker.

Life and Living It is a well crafted film that was executed wonderfully. But why do I feel that many of the films now being made will continue to be Americanized unfavorably? It is important not to lose culture, and finding ways to incorporate culture in new and exciting ways should be the ultimate goal.

Although Life and Living It is very similar to The Best Man, just with minor changes here and there, I would still recommend it because the film does offer other things with its plot and presentation. Good flick!

For those who have not yet seen The Best Man, see it for yourself and then compare the two...it would make a great double feature! The Best Man is a superb film which stars Taye Diggs, Nia Long, Morris Chestnut, Sanaa Lathan and Terrence Howard. The film is notable for having launched the career of Terrence Howard, and for the song "As" by Stevie Wonder, an amazing song from his classic 1976 album Songs in the Key of Life.

I saw the movie after reading this review and I totally loved it. I loved the story line or should I say lines:

Kente's disappointment and bitterness against Professional/ Feminista Ghanaian women.--which is real in today's Ghana.

The stint about Down's syndrome children and how they are treated.

Older women using meoney to buy young, goodlooking men.

What was suprising to see was the Salsa dancing scene. I was suprised how much Ghanaians have bough into foreign cultures. I would have loved it more if he taught traditional dance or African dance in a professional setting.

The wardrope: When will i see some Woodin/Ankara laces sewn in modern chic runway style in Ghanaian films? The costumes were a tad westernized besides Kente's whose is obviously bent on being traditional. And the fake hair. Oh my goodness. very embarassing. I look foward to the day when we will be proud of our own hair and fabrics.

And i was even more proud of Kente--Brew Riverson Jr.--- He was my English teacher in JSS! Haven't seen him since then.

Oh and also the scence by the river in Ada. That is my mom's hometown. So u can say some things about this movie was close to my heart. I just love the calmness in Ada. And I heard the Krobo language spoken in a movie for the first time. --by the lady who was taking care of the child with DS. I will recommend this film.

Talking

I watched the movie and it was interesting. I cannot see the comparison that some one made with the "the brothers, best man movies" as this movie has its own storyline...unless of course the bar scene where all the men met to have a beer...LOL..as if that does not happen everywhere... ...I did not like the relationship between the guy who like married women and his friend's sister..(cannot remember their names)....they were both in the salsa dance....i thought they could have expanded on their relationship a little bit...i didn't care for the way the girl was waiting for him after he missed the dance lesson in the parking lot...why was she waiting for him? It didn't make sense...they could have started that friendship a different way...like showing the two dancing and an attraction generating from there...then finding her waiting for him after he missed a lesson could have made sense....but i liked the movie....the 'oyibo ways' was a bit too much but they pulled it thru.

One of the best African movies I seen of all time; great direction, great cast who could act, great dialouge, great wardrobe and make up artists, concise plot, etc. Kudos to Shirley Frimpong for delivering such a great screen play and movie direction. Unlike the silliness that some of these so called screen playwriters, producers, and directors have been making for years calling them movies.

Very interesting movie indeed. At least it got me watching it again and again.

For once I didn't have to use either my FF or volume control button.

What!!

Goodness gracious!! I am totally astonished that there is not more noise about this movie. WHAT!!!!!
It totally blows idumota out of the water totally. WHAT!!!!!

Ehen, dat is what I am talking about. I was like - Majid and Van Vicker are the best Ghana has? NO!! Come and see fine, fine, fine brothers in this one. And they can ACT. The dancer could actually dance. The scenery was absolutely fabulous. Makes me wanna go to Ghana sooo badly. This movie is just a moving advert for Ghana. It was very, very, veerrrrry, veeerrrry good. High quality everything. I dunno why none of these guys are ruling the Ghanaian movie world. They are gorgous, and good. They were much, much better than the women. And the bar scenes were so natural - just guys hanging out, chilling, talking about their women.
I am very, very, very impressed. Somebody just upped the game.

However, as others have alluded, it was kinda like watching an African American movie. Like the male version of waiting to exhale, or something like that. It was too oyinbo. Nothing to relate to. Too much grammar, why speaking french in a restaurant in Ghana? Why all the accents? And all the fancy names. And the Salsa dancing - I mean it was sexy and all that, it was just too much. The average Naija and even Ghana movie is under polished - wham, bam, wham, bambam. No subtlety, no finesse, nothing. But this one, the polish is too much. Kilode? Its kinda like they put a picture on a magazine cover and its so retouched its almost unreal. Its beautiful, its attractive, its just not real. The oyinbo was too much.

I am not going to retell the story - its all about love and all that, you can get the gist of it from reading the posts before mine. I am very impressed with picture, sound quality, even the story, the detailing, most of the costuming ( there were places where that was bad too - like dressing up a wife like a tramp!). In general though, high quality movie. I was really impressed. Hospital scenes were well done. The court hearing was decently done. The definitely crossed 't's and dotted 'i's on this one. A few more like this and Idumota will be royally screwed.

What was missing is relatability. Nothing African about it. Except the time when they went to the village to see the little girl. ( that girl was not six years old pleassse!!). All the rest of it was not african to me, and it will not resonate with majority of those who watch the african movies. We need to raise the quality, but not by squeezing the essence out of our movies. Its the culture that makes them ours, otherwise all our movies will be the same.

Having said that though, this one is way above Idumota standard. Waaaay above!!

Rating: 13/15
