The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency - Nollywood Version

Written by Alexander McCall Smith and adapted for small screen, directed by the late Anthony Minghella.

Just finished watching it on BBCiplayer and thoroughly enjoyed it.

However, this thread isn't about it as enjoyable as it was...as I was watching it, I saw Bimbo Akintola as Mma Ramotswe,(played by Jill Scott) RMD as the gangster (played by Idris Elba), the woman with the unfaithful husband (forgotten her name) as Dakore Egbuson...

Can anyone who has watched it suggest the actors that would have fit the roles potrayed?

That aside, watching this drama made me appreciate the high level of untapped, untamed and poorly directed talent we have in Nigeria.

I feel we can do a lot better than this if only we use what we have constructively.

Those of us who can spare time, pls watch it and share your thoughts and views.

Thanks

That's true! I didn't actually think of him you know...you see am, two naijaruler heads are better than one

What about JLB Matekoni? I thought of Justus Esiri but he's a bit too old; perhaps if he was younger?

Definitely Bimbo for Mma. Jill Scott nailed the accent though. Tew tight.

The girl that played the woman with the unfaithful husband looks a lot like Dakore down to her carriage. Perhaps Jim Iyke could play the unfaithful husband? He attempts 'smooth' quite well. Maybe even Yemi blaq if the Director can infuse some life/depth in him and break the monotonal recitations.

Dube's gay character could be played by Emeka Ike

I can't think of a fitting Naija actress for the secretary who was by far the best character in the movie. Adulterer! lol

What about Gloria Anozie-Young for Mma Ramotswe? Tonto Dike for Mma Makutsi (or is that too far-fetched?), Blessing Effiom for Happy Bapetsi??? What do people think?

We already had a Nigerian in the role of Kremlin (David Oyelowo).

I have a feeling that if Nollywood were to remake this movie it would be a total bust.

Nollywood seems to be about portraying the fantasy life of Nigerians and not the real deal. I for one would like to see a movie in Pidgin English that is not comical..ok that is off point...lol

Anyway sha, if the movie were to be remade in Nigeria would the Nollywood Directors dare to show us the run down building that Mma Ramotswe moves into with her three teacups and solitary teapot?

Would they dare to let her have only two busted up typewriters or would she have the latest laptop instead?

What about her car? Would it be the latest hummer instead of the broken down pick-up truck? I doubt it.

Well it will depend on who is in the directing seat don't you think? A knowledgeable director would take the facts of the story into consideration in order to use the appropriate props other wise its really not an authentic movie.
I know Nollywood is well guilty of not keeping to the facts of the stories it portrays. I've seen house-girls with well manicured nails and well groomed hair styles which clash so obviously with the social situations of the character they are playing, but I've also seen a lot of the traditional movies use props and costumes very well.
My hope is that some of the producers, actors, directors etc in Nollywood spend a little time on sites like this, it could make a lot of difference.

You are right! The question on here should be: What Director can do justice to such a story?
