Should Big Brother Africa be on Nigerian television?

Big Brother Africa...It has been banned by the government in Malawi from the airwaves, despite the fact that one of their nationals was selected to be one of the housemates. Other countries have complained about it too.

Prominent people like Prof Wole Soyinka have also spoken against it. Is anyone else seeing what they are seeing? Or are they just making noise for another 15mins of fame and airtime?

big brother

as far as im concerned there is nothing wrong with it. it started as an experiment here in the uk and though the fourth edition of the series has recently concluded, the viewing figures have reportedly began to slide. Fortunately we live in a ratings driven country. if a programme is broadcast and the viewers are not impressed, the programme is soon yanked off air. This is analogous to the movie of Ben affleck and jennifer Lopez movie called Gigli. The reviews it got was so vitriolic, it was removed from the theatres within a week!!!! i think they should let the people decide whether to watch it or not, mercifully there are other stations that u could watch if u r not interested in it.

be happy

T

I will follow Wole Soyinka because he is the man of his words. I take pleasure in him anyway. I didn’t see it on TV but I was given the magazines and also it was posted in my email. The big brother Africa was just a nasty Bull Sh**. Is there no censor in dem acting? Gosh it was really disgusting and shameless. Not that they did not act well, of course they did but showing all their bodies is not called for.
Bayo & Abby’s pic, they did not call it a porno floor, they said big brother. That picture was so nasty. That is if y’all have seen it. Using his hands so cover the small hum. Well what’s up with the cameraman, does his face also have censor or the hiding camera? They also showed them while having their bath. Lord, America Big brother is not all that disgusting. If even they want to try something nasty, they will either be under cover or behind camera.
THEY NEED CENSOR IN AFRICA. Exclusion on Nigeria movies

In short, they tried but they need censor.

That's an interesting concept. Big Brother Africa....ya don't say. Can someone point me to a news article on this? Do we have any reality TV shows in Naija right now?

I think that if the production quality & planning is comparable to that of the "Big Brother" U.S version then yes. Why not?! What points did Prof. Wole make as to why it shouldn't be allowed. Afterall, many Naija people are just as conniving and underhanded as the contestants we see on the game shows. It'd be an opportunity for someone to get some money.

But realistically if you ask me, to increase tourism to Nigeria, the Nigerian Film Commission (or other named organization serving the same purpose) should get in touch with the people who produce "The Amazing Race" so that one of the pit stops or legs of the race for that show would have to require the contestants to go to Nigeria. The frustration in the airport alone will make some of the contestants pull their hair out. Now that's what I call a challenge!

I can really see Nigeria in this show...perhaps the contestant will have to tape some palm wine from a palm wine tree as one of their challenges...or maybe eat a plate of Aku (termites) or eat some dog meat in Kaduna.....or maybe they could spend a day in the market at Lagos looking for a clue in a particular persons stall.....whatever it is, I'm sure it will be challenging fun and exciting.

Why should it be banned? There is parental control on the dstv so its not like it cant be controlled. These people just react based on hearsays. Some of dem dont even watch it.

I will only respond to this the day I find logic in keeping 12 people in ahouse doing nothing but displaying their human/animal ways for 91 days only for the last man standing to win awhole lot of money. Pardon my narrow thinking it just doesn't make sense to me. I would understand it better if Big Brother was training actors, painters, singers, writters, poets or any sort of artists in those given 91 days so that we know what the 100.000$ is a reward for.
If I was into some kind of belief affiliations I would even say its almost devilish because its more of an indicent proposal.

If Nigerian Tv doesnt want ot show it, that's fine. Its on air on a PAY PER VIEW channel, so individuals can make their choice of whether to watch it if they do have access to the DSTV bouquet or not.....its not even an issue, a click of the button takes you away

It's a reality show concept that seeks to entertain and not educate for the most part(the colleges of education and vocational schools are there to train people in career skills!)

It's what it is with no apologies...... mindless, crazy, voyeuristic, and sometimes unholy entertainement..yes....AND I LOVE IT!Watch at your own risk, or dont if it doesnt appeal to you. The beauty of the world we live in now is THERE IS CHOICE!A click of a button and you dont even have to watch one second of it, while those like me that use it to relax after a hard days work choose to, as long as we are realistic that it doesnt offer anything other than a few chuckles at the end of the day, I dont see the problem

That right there is the problem, how many of the people who watch are that realistic? The show usually ends up being an avenue to spread hate and disaffection among african viewers. Remember all the text messages, all the hatred on the forum? For what purpose? Something that is supposed to be fun ends up not uplifting you in any way. I used to be a fan, but after last year's fiasco, you cant catch me watching it. You can take that to the bank.
