THE LETTER THAT STARTED STARTED IT ALL
Seek proper understanding of the Lord and purge yourself of pagan beliefs, Abubakar Umar tells Obasanjo The text of an open letter by retired Army Colonel, Abubakar Umar to President Olusegun Obasanjo[/b]
THE REPLY FROM THE PRESIDENCY
Presidency Replies Abubakar Umar: Tuesday, January 27, 2004
It's You Devil Is Using
• Umar: No apologies
The Presidency has joined issues with former Kadu-na State Governor, Col. Abubakar Umar (rtd), over his criticisms this week of President Olusegun Obasan-jo.
Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, yesterday traded recriminations with Umar. He accused Umar of bad faith, and described him as frustrated and unfulfilled, having lost out on a job bid with the government. But Umar last night dismissed the claims as idle and false. The presidential aide, in a strongly-worded statement in Abuja, accused Umar of bad faith in his criticisms of President Obasanjo, which were made public on Thurs-day. He also proffered reasons why Umar attacked the President.
In the statement made available to THISDAY, Fani-Kayode also accused Umar of trying in vain to divide the presidency. The former military governor had in an open letter to the President this week said the Obasanjo government was the worst ever in the administration of Nigeria.
Umar, who catalogued the ills of the Obasanjo government, told the President in an open letter: "Today, while your flock is suffering on account of your bad leadership, you are busy attributing your misdeeds to the good Lord. Those of us who are able to discern know that you are mistaking the devil for the Lord." But in a swift reaction, Fani-Kayode described Umar's comments as "tactless and disrespectful contribution of an obviously frustrated and unfulfilled man."
The presidential aide in his statement accused Col Umar of having lost out on a job application, and in effect now sees everything as bad in Obasanjo's government. He alleged: "When we won the last elections, he lobbied fiercely for a key government appointment, which he did not get and ever since then, he has been anti-government and anti-Mr President."
The statement wondered why a Colonel could afford to insult a General, arguing that such was never done. Fani-Kayode also accused Umar of trying in vain to divide the presidency, stating: "He tried in vain to divide the Presidency. He was ignored and told in very clear terms that the Presidency is one, and ever since then he has been insulting both Mr President and Mr Vice-President."
The text of Fani-Kayode's statement reads: "These are tactless and disrespectful contribution of an obviously frustrated and unfulfilled man. When we won the last elections, he lobbied fiercely for a key government appointment, which he did not get, and ever since then he has been anti-government and anti-Mr President. He tried in vain to divide the Presidency.
He was ignored and told in very clear terms that the Presidency is one, and ever since then, he has been insulting both Mr President and Mr Vice-President. It is a tragedy of monumental proportion that a man of Col Umar's immense statute could have degenerated to this level of prosody, disinformation, lies, and deceit. We reject and renounce his allegation and insult. And we say that if he maintains that Mr President is hearing from the devil, then we reserve the right to conclude that he himself is not only hearing from the devil, but he is serving the devil...
"He should not incite the people against the government and the President. In which Army can a Colonel insult a General in such a way as this? We know who he is working for and what he is trying to do." But in a telephone conversation with THISDAY last night, Umar denied that he ever sought job from the government. He described the claims by Fani-Kayode as empty and false. This is what he said in response to Fani-Kayode: "I don't want to join issues with someone like Femi Fani-Kayode. The problem with him is that he abused Obasanjo and got a job, maybe he thought everybody is a jobber like him.
"If I am after power, after all I did for Obasanjo in 1999, I did not have to lobby him to get a job. The truth is that he actually offered me one and I turned it down. "The National Security Adviser, General Aliyu Mu-hammed Gusau, took me to the Vice-President who made the offer. Dr. Usman Bugaje was there and I rejected the offer.
These people are alive and they can speak out if I am lying. The president also has a monthly media chat programme where he can say where I asked for a job.
"If I was a jobber how would I have resigned my commission as I did because of the June 12 crisis? "I am really sorry for the President who has people like Fani-Kayode working for him, making enemies for him everyday. Where was he when we were fighting for democracy in Nigeria? He should tell Nigerians what job I lobbied for.
"But Fani-kayode is not relevant because for all you care, he could just be saying what he was not sent to say as he most often does. Because the President knows I never begged for a job, much less turn me down."
