Info Needed: Shipping vehicles to Nigeria
I am planning to ship a few vehicles to naija but I ran into several issues that I really need to figure out--any help would be appreciated.
First, I was informed that in order to ship a car overseas by boat, I must purchase a "container", which comes in 40ft and 20ft. Four cars can fit in the 40 ft container, and two in the 20ft container. The only problem, however, is that I'm only shipping ONE car, so I don't need to purchase either, since the cost of the 40ft is around $6000, and the 20 ft around $4000---WAY too expensive. After doing some searching, I found out about “shared containers”—people who are also shipping one or two cars, but don’t want to pay for a full one. So they “share” the container with others who wish to ship stuff to the same destination.
But just this weekend, a friend informed me that cars does not have to be shipped in a container. I can choose RORO - Roll On Roll Off - where the car is not containerized. However, from what I understand, cars rolled on cannot have anything inside them. Something else I was made aware of is that there is a hefty fee for clearing the car in Lagos. If the car is in a container it will cost 300,000 Naira to clear. In addition - you cannot ship a car more than 8 years old - any car over 8 years old most go to Benin and then you will have to pay to bring them into Lagos. But you can ship trucks, vans or buses of any age, but not vehicles. They also said something about shipments getting rerouted or delayed.
Does anyone have more information about shipping to naija?

His Majesty:
Are you planning to sell the vehicle(s) in Nigeria, or are they for private use? Shipping cars to Nigeria for business purposes is not the best thing to do.

..yeah..I think he'll save himself a bunch of headaches by buying when he reaches Nigeria...but do some research and compare prices.....I think the list is a list of vehicles he wishes to see prices for sha....I think personally I would leave the headache of shipping and clearing to those professional shippers who know their way around the Naija system...but still do research the prices to know I'm not overpaying if I'll be buying in Nigeria..

So far all practical purposes it, if I want a car in Nigeria, but reside abroad, will it be cheaper for me to just go buy the car IN Nigeria, instead of all these seeming clearing headaches, bribes, etc???
Good thread HM!
