FG pushes for Alamieyeseigha's trial
Anti-graft measures paid off - Obasanjo
* Gov assembles defence team
* Deputy summoned to Abuja
* Commissioners go into hiding
AMID the report that Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha of Bayelsa State, arrested last Thursday in London for alleged money laundering, would remain in Britain until November 15 when his fate would be determined by the Metropolitan Police, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) may have commenced moves for the trial of the embattled governor in the British capital.
The EFCC's wish for the governor's immediate trial will, however, depend on the strength of the evidence the Metropolitan Police may have against him.
A source close to Sunday Vanguard disclosed this at the weekend just as President Olusegun Obasanjo said the fact that Alamieyeseigha was arrested on money laundering allegations, in spite of his position, was an indication that his administration's anti-corruption measures were working. More

Alamieyeseigha Fall out!→Governors scramble to close foreign accounts!
Four days after Bayelsa State Governor, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha was arrested by British police for alleged money laundering, fresh facts emerged weekend that 17 out of 19 governors operating foreign accounts have closed them in compliance with a directive by the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) on such accounts.
But Governors Orji Uzor Kalu and Rashidi Ladoja of Abia and Oyo states respectively are yet to close their foreign accounts according to chairman of CCB, Justice Bashir Sambo.
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) last weekend, Sambo explained that closure of the foreign accounts followed his Bureau’s earlier directive to that effect to the affected governors, even as he refused to disclose names of the 17 governors.
As he spoke, mixed reactions continued to pour in over the arrest of Alamieyeseigha by the British Metropolitan Police at London Heathrow airport last Thursday.more

Some of our governors 're not better than armed robbers—JUSTICE ILORI
ABUJA—ONE time Chief Judge of Lagos State , Justice Omotunde Ilori yesterday said that some of the serving governors and ministers in the country today are not better than armed robbers.
He spoke amidst growing calls for a thorough investigation and possible prosecution of arrested Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha of Bayelsa state over money laundering allegations.
"Some of them (governors) spend money in such a way that they are nothing less than armed robbers. If their immunity is taken away, you will see how many of them will be prosecuted," he said, adding:
"Some of our ministers used to borrow money to go on luxury public bus to Abuja . But after their swearing-in as ministers, they now buy properties of hundreds of millions. Where did the money come from?" Justice Ilori rhetorically asked.more

Foreign account: 17 govs comply with tribunal’s order
Chairman, Code of Conduct Tribunal, Justice Bashir Sambo says that 17 out of 19 governors complied with the bureau’s directives for any public officer to close their foreign accounts’.
Sambo told newsmen in Abuja at the weekend that the governors who complied had no problem with the tribunal.
The tribunal chairman explained that most of the governors in their declaration of asset forms disclosed their foreign assets and the bureau advised them to close their foreign accounts because it is against the constitution” . more

No immunity for govs outside Nigeria -FG
ABUJA - THE Presidency said, yesterday, that Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha of Bayelsa State who was arrested in London last Thursday for alleged money laundering, or indeed any Nigerian elected government official cannot enjoy diplomatic immunity outside the shores of the country.
The state government has, however, dismissed reports that the governor was arraigned in court, while the Ijaw People?s Assembly has written to the British High Commissioner in Nigeria, protesting his arrest.
Reacting to suggestions that Governor Alamieyeseigha ought not to have been arrested since he was carrying a diplomatic passport at the time, Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode, said the fact that some government officials carry diplomatic passport does not confer immunity on them outside Nigeria. more
