Getting the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Alhaji Nuhu Ribadu, for an interview can be a herculean task. Last week when our reporter got to his office in Abuja, he attended to every other person and decided to ‘detain’ the reporter till when he would hear his ‘case’. The reporter decided to enter a ‘plea bargain’ with him and he consented, but he was not ready for the reporter until 1.30a.m. the following day, when he took him to his sparsely furnished bungalow apartment at the Police Barracks in Maitama, Abuja. He claimed he had been occupying the apartment since 1997. In this interview with BAMIDELE ADEBAYO, Ribadu speaks on the arrest and trial of the Bayelsa State Governor, DSP Alamieyeseigha; allegations of corruption preferred against President Olusegun Obasanjo by Governor Orji Uzor Kalu of Abia State, among several other current national issues. Excerpts:

Nigeria as a nation became independent 45 years ago. What is your comment about this?

I think it is an important period for us, a day of reflection, a day we have to assess ourselves and see what we have done for ourselves. Whether we have come of ages, whether we have been fair to the country, what is expected of us in the country managed by us, at the point of getting out of the colonial controlled era. Today, I make bold to say that we have cause to celebrate. At least, we are in a democracy. I think from my own assessment, we are probably for the first time getting in the right direction. May be because I’m part of what is happening in the country today, I am at advantage to know some of the things happening. But I think we are trying to repair the damage that took place, because there are a lot of unfortunate events that impacted negatively on our development as a country.

VINCE, I am loving this RIBADU man sooooooooo much! All Nigeria needs is decipline and our problems are solved for ever. I really admire Obasanjo for asking him to investigate him and make it public.. No President/head of state has ever done anythig like this in the history of Nigeria... I just wish peeps would consentrate on the things Obasanjo is TRYING to accomplish instead of bashing him and being cynical every second.

This is what real leadership is all about,and not just talking shop.Kudos
to OBJ jare and i just pray that he sees this thing right to the very end.Our leadership elites need real cleaning up.They have robbed and shamed us long enough.
