To date there are nearly 7,000 African troops in the Darfur area of Sudan, patrolling the region under the auspice of the AU. Nigeria, of course, is the leading force in this contingent, and thus it's young Nigerian men and women in whom's butts will be on the front lines of any deadly altercations in which have and will continue to occur between the AU forces and the rebel groups in the area fighting each other. I Strongly feel that this situation is going to get allot worst for the AU forces before it gets better, that is if it gets better at all.
Under the determined leadership of Obasanjo, the AU will not be backing out of this mission without a really good fight, and as things continuously get crowded and lines of authority continuously become more and more grey around Darfur, tempers may well rise to a climax of all out war. Incidents like
this just make matters worst. Rest assured that the Nigerian's forces in Darfur were not very happy about this, and neither was Obasanjo and his fellow cabinet members. Methods to promptly prevent incidents like this from happening again...
WILL be executed. Already more AU forces, most of whom are Nigerian, are being prepared to be sent into Darfur, this force will take the ever increasing AU force to a manpower presence of nearly 8,000 strong.
Yet, if attacks upon the AU forces continue, that nearly 8,000 may just as well shoot up to 10, 12, 14,000 in little time, along with the presence of much heavier forms of weaponry. And most, if not all, of these new forces will be Nigerian young men and women... bogged down in an situation similar to that of the US forces in Iraq, while its supporting nations in the area, like those of the US in Iraq... drag upon their coat tails. This whole thing is turning into a odd case of Deja vu all over again, real quick.
