Laptop for each Nigerian kid

REMMY NWEKE, Tunis


NIGERIA and five other countries have been named the first beneficiaries of the One-Laptop-One-Child Initiative. Others are Egypt, India, Brazil, China and Thailand.

Chairman of the initiative, Professor Nicholas Negroponte who disclosed this in Tunis Wednesday, said the laptops would be distributed through various governments of benefitting nations.


Also, Nigeria has redeemed its 0.5 million Euros (aboout N87.5 million) to the Digital Solidarity Fund, President Olusegun Obasanjo has said. He spoke in Tunis.

Meanwhile, Initial distribution of the laptops is expected by first quarter of next year, when the Nigerian authority is expected to buy into the idea, although interest has been shown by the government.

This idea, as good as it may be, i am affraid only the men in government and their immidiate family will benefit from it.

How about providing providing compurras through mass equipping of schools?That is much more beleivable and doable.

That is very good sha but let hope it works because now they'll just either divert the computers to their own people or even sell them and share the cash amongst themselves but let me not be negative sha lets wait and see how this is going to work.

wat crap...what is omo iya-alata going to do with lap-top?? like vince said...why not supply schools instead.. Pple keep coming up with half-baked ideas and expect applause...Anyway, i know some cousins who cud use the laptop sha..

This is an excellent idea.. FOR THE THIEVIES!!!

I wonder how much kickbacks, markups or money will go missing during all this.. While 'some' people will get old swapped out laptops, other will be buying homes in Aspen and Monte Carlo from the sale of the original laptops.

People are hungry and need opportunities and better basic amenities..... not laptops...
