Questions about Lagos
QUESTION # 1
I've read that the Lagos State government in collaboration with the World Bank and National government is planing on finally beginning the construction of the Mega Cities light rail metro system. It's about damn time, I say. Though upon looking up information on the project, I keep seeing references to the scale of the projects as being little more than a metro line. JUST ONE LINE?? To service the entirety of Lagos, a MEGA MATROPOLIS OF (((15 MILLION PEOPLE)))???
I automatically thought to myself that such a situation cant be true. New York City has the largest metro rail system in the world, yet only has about half the amount of people as Lagos does, a city in which will reach a the very least a mammoth amount of nearly ((25Mill)) inhabitants by the year 2020. WHAT DA HELL IS ONE METRO LINE GONNA DO TO HELP THE TRAFFIC SITUATION IN THE CITY???.... (((NOTHING))!!! That's what!!
That city needs a full scale underground and elevated interconnecting, full scale metro system in which will service the entire Metropolis, and in fact all of the nation's major cities should be in the planning stage now... for developing networks of their own, especially Enugu, Port Harcourt, Ibadan and Abuja, whos populations are soring off the hook, so to say. But back to Lagos now. Dose anyone know if it's actually true that the planed metro system will be comprised of just one line through the city?

Your question should have been, does anyone know that the metro system project promised by Tinubu during his second-term election campaign is finally about to take off? Cos this is the first i'm hearing of it.

This is the first you're hearing of it?? Wow!! But now that I've got your attention, maybe you can answer my second question.
Question # 2
Do you think the government's plan to clean up the transportation mess in Lagos has been working?? Things like building new main corridors, expanding and refurbishing others, eliminating roadside hawkers and piles of refuse from the side of major roadways. Dispersing folks who operate business under flyovers and other bridgeways, eliminating tankers from parking their trucks on the expressways, and decommissioning the organization that was set up to monitor the state's roads and insure their safety ( forgot the name of it), in the place of a new joint federal/state system to insure sanctity on the state's roads.

Naw, sis. Those are things in which have already taken place or began to take place, according to news reports and some folks I've spoken too. Now I'm asking you if you've witnessed these things taking place, and if so, is it apparent in anyway that they're making a difference in the cities transportation situation. I've spoken with some folks who've said yes.. it has, and less others who've said no... it hasn't. See, I'm not taking everything see in the news reports at face value; I actually go onto sites like this and ask folks, like you, living in Naija about them, so to get the inside scoop.

Ok, now that we've cleared up that fact
Lemme answer d question, Yes, I've witnessed some of these changes, like clearing refuse, sending hawkers and stopping tanker drivers from parking thier trucks on bridges etc, to be honest these things have worked but only for a while becuase there is no sustainability or consistency. However, i have to give the lagos govt kudos for trying to battle refuse on the streets of lagos, the situation is so much better now than it used to be and that has helped transpotation. But the roads are worse now than they used to be, the state govt seems to be focusing on roads in Lagos Island, which is supposed to be commercial nerve centre, and where all the companies have thier offices. It would be nice if they could also do some work on the roads in the Lagos mainland as well cos that's where most people reside in lagos, even the state governor resides on the mainland.
The transport management authority is called LASTMA (Lagos state traffic management authority).

Thanks a bunch for your answer!! Now as for the highlighted part; it's do to the failure of the state gov. to tackle the State's transportation situation properly that the Fed. government has decided to step in and partner up with the stat gov. to get this situation under control and the ball moving more quickly on the projects in which need to be done. It's been due to LASTMA's total failure to handle its duties properly that it was eliminated by the government when it decided to step in and play a more direct role in whipping Lagos into shape, by 2007.
Expect to see a rapid change in the amount of road construction going on all around Lagos this year.. But it wont be just on the roads that such massive showing of works is expected to preside, in that increased, federal aided, development is also expect to solidly hit the schools, hospitals, ports and many other entities in the Mega Metropolis. The city will be turned into like one big construction site this year. But hey, talk is cheap. Let's wait and see what happens.
