Tinubu again on State Police!

Tinubu proposes N50,000 pay for constable

The Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu yesterday canvassed N50, 000.00 as the minimum monthly salary for a police constable.
Tinubu who made the suggestion while addressing the public session of the Presidential Committee on Police Reform at Ikeja, also suggested that the minimum entry qualification should be the Ordinary National Diploma (OND), because "the technology of today requires a very serious attention''.
He also spoke on the need for the police high command to come up with a pension's scheme that would assist after their retirement.
The governor wondered why the nation's security, the first contact foreigners have with the country should be filled with men, who are paid a paltry N15,000 monthly and be expected to be effective. "There can be no investment in the country if there is no security," he said.
Tinubu averred that what he recommended could be easily paid from the proceeds of the ongoing privatisation exercise embarked upon by the Federal Government.
He called for the scrapping of the Ministry of Police Affairs to be replaced with the Nigeria Police Council.
`"The ministry is just a bureaucracy while the officers doing the job in the field are dying of penury. The ministry is just a big edifice with staff earning fat salaries,'' he said.
Tinubu added that the Inspector General of Police should be representing the Police Command on the Federal Executive Council and relate with the command directly on decisions reached on the command.
He also called for state and community-based policing system, saying that would make the art more effective. "Only a few barracks should be retained and maintained by the police for rapid response. Majority of the officers should be serving at the community level.''
`"Lack of state and community police system has led to the rise in ethnic militia which has no legal backing to operate but had the support of some state chief executive officers,'' said Tinubu who also condemned the over centralisation of the police command structure.
The governor stressed that he was capable of maintaining, financing and equipping his state police if given the constitutional powers.
Tinubu who recalled that the police family used to be rosy but the case is not the same today, urged the committee to be blunt and frank in their report. "The barracks are now a nightmare and the police college an eyesore. The welfare of the police needs to improve."
Chief Lugard Aimiuwu, a former president of the Nigeria Institute of Management said the Nigeria police must be perceived as a first-choice employer, and employer that utilises best practices in recruitment, selection, deployment, training development and promotions.
It should be an organisation that is market driven and one whose reward and disciplinary systems and processes are clear, consistent, predictable and in line with universal best practices.
"An organisation that is more proactive than reactive, an organisation that is not only current but is a leader in forensic resources, surveillance, technology, including satellite driven systems,'' he said,.
The chairman of the committee, Alhaji Muhammaed Dan Malami who said Lagos is a difficult state to govern , however thanked Tinubu for remaining focused despite various distractions.
"We are all aware that the president inaugurated a committee on police reform on January 17, 2006 to review and recommend measures that would enhance the efficiency of the Nigerian police force and summit its report within three months from the date it was inaugurated," he said.
He however, said the committee would welcome any advice on how to generate adequate information to help it.

I just love this Guy (Tinubu) how on earth can a man with family be paid 15000 Naira a month? This same man will still have to pay for his own uniform and fuel the tank of their police vehicle from the same money. This same guy is working around with gun and you expect him not to rob people? Men! I respect Nigerian police.

What do you think of State Police in Nigeria?

Some police are even getting paid for less. Meanwhile 10k is not even enough for me to spend in a week. I'm glad this is happening. I have concerns for this police officers aswell. Great improvement. I also heard how he is planning to send people selling stuffs off Lagos mainland highways.

R u serious? that guy is a good man. I know a family who has a child that need medical care not only did he pay for the childs medical treatment abroad, he also paid for the child's family tickets and ordered the minister for health to sort out UK medical visas for the child and his family. People say that unless Tinubu does not hear your story the most important thing is to get your case in front of him he will always have pity. What a good man!

How I wish others (Governors) can emulate this man (Tinubu), especially Edo state governor. Benin would have changed by now.

Tinubu should CLEAN UP lagos. The city is an eye sore. That should be the very first task and to me the simplest task of any Governor in Nigeria. Only Governor Duke of Cross River and Muazu of Bauchi have performed creditably well imho. Visit these two states and be totally impressed. All these other ones just dey blow grammer and collect fake self-induced awards every where.

Marwa rehabilitaed the area boys and they worked as road maintenance contractors. What has Tinubu done with the area boys wahala? And to think he lived abroad. I thought at least by now, Lagos will be a relatively clean city.
