Okonjo-Iweala appointed external affairs minister of Nigeria; moved from Finance
A former World Bank vice president and Finance Minister of Nigeria until a few hours ago, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Okonjo-Iweala, 50, has been named the country's external affairs minister. The announcement a few hours ago was made by President Olusegun Obasanjo. He said that "The former finance minister, Ngozi, will remain chairman of the economic team and carry out oversight functions with external financial institutions," during a swearing-in ceremony in Abuja, the federal capital.
USAfricaonline.com editors and analysts inside Nigeria and U.S describe the history-making appointment as "remarkable", "requiring a wait and see approach for now" and "interesting development."
Many international investors commend Iweala's technocratic work on Nigeria's economic landscape. She studied at the prestigious Harvard and M.I.T. universities, in the U.S. Nenadi Usman who served Okonjo-Iweala's deputy was announced as finance minister. Oluyemi Adeniji, until recently the external affairs minister was moved to internal affairs.
The issue in the minds of some observers will be: will Obasanjo and Usman sustain the reforms spearheaded by the duo of Okonjo-Iweala and Prof. Soludo (at the Central Bank).
