Pete, back in Ghana too in sec schools girls are not allowed to grow their hair which never made sense to me. But their reason was to protect those whose parents could not go to that extra lengh in providing their kids with extra money to buy perming creams and so forth.

Perming? How about weaving/braiding? Their reason here was/is to encourage concentration on education and eliminate attractiveness to an extent. But then I find some of the girls struggling to grow it back after they leave highschool. They’ll apply every chemical in their reach, some of which help damage their scalp. I later realized the rule wasn't implemented in private and federal schools though.

If these people knew the effects of what they are actually doing to their children they will think twice. But as usual, people see it as part of their beliefs and something they ancestors have been practicing for years. But yet still, some of them do not survive this and die. Some of the girls are also known to still have kids out of wedlock anyway..

Yes, ignorance as some of their kids are known to die or be permanently damaged as a results of this. What kills me is that, you will find some families whom should know better still doing it as it is part of their custom and beliefs and they do not want to disobey their gods. That is what kills me when I hear such nonsense.
