Published: 06/10/27
Two police officers, one of them a sergeant and the other a female constable, have burgled their own station in Lagos and removed substantial cash. Sources told Our News crew this morning that the police officers (names withheld) were on night duty at the Idimu Police Station in Lagos when they allegedly conspired to steal the N145,000 kept in one of the offices at the station. The money was said to be contributions made by policemen at the station.
It was further gathered that the woman constable gained access through the ceiling into the Administrative Officer’s office where the money was kept and later got out through the window with the money while the male police sergeant stood outside watching. However, they were caught in the act by a senior police officer whom they begged to forgive them. As at the time of filing this report. It was learnt that the thieving cops were being interrogated over the incident by their bosses.
A police sergeant simply called Segun was dismissed from service at the station for stealing a complete engine of a Toyota Hiace bus which was involved in an accident. Meanwhile, in a determined war against armed robbers in Lagos State, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Zone 2, Adedayo Adeoye, has disclosed that the police would soon begin a programme aimed at training officers to adequately combat robbery incidents in the state.
Adeoye, who was speaking in respect of the recent killing of policemen by armed robbers in the state, said the police are determined to prepare for the war against crime. The AIG told The NEWS crew that police officers would undergo series of training in arms and arm combat soon. “Very soon, we will start promotional course. When we have promotional courses, police officers will have to undergo series of training, including arms and combat in order to be able to dislodge armed robbers,” he stated.
Adeoye said aside the training of officers, lectures would also be given to them on how to combat crime effectively. “In addition to the training, the men would also be lectured because we don’t want a situation where our men will rush to the scene of crime and be slaughtered like cows. “So, they are going to be lectured on how to approach the scene of crime because those eight cops that were killed recently was because they approached the scene of the crime wrongly. It was an operational error that got them killed,” he said.
Also, in a bid to rid the police of bad eggs, the AIG said some of the corrupt elements are now being arrested and prosecuted. He disclosed that five policemen were recently arrested by the Police Monitoring Team for extorting money from motorists. “They are now being detained and would be made to face a disciplinary panel. We have not relented in our effort to kick out bad elements and it is a continuous exercise,” he stated.
