Another Nigerian Wife Found Dead , Husband Arrested
Mother Killed In Md. Home
Three Kids Located, Husband Arrested
By Ann E. Marimow and Ruben Castaneda
Washington Post Staff Writers
Tuesday, January 2, 2007; Page B01
A Burtonsville woman was found slain inside her home early yesterday, and police arrested her estranged husband last night after a frantic search for the man and the couple's three young children that ended in a brief car chase.
Montgomery County police issued an Amber Alert for the children -- ages 4 to 8 -- of Chidiebere Omenihu Ochulo after finding her dead inside her two-story townhouse on a quiet cul-de-sac. Neighbors said the children's father, Kelechi Charles Emeruwa, was estranged from Ochulo. Court filings show he was the subject of several domestic violence allegations.
About 6:15 p.m., police got a tip from someone who saw a blue Honda Civic being driven erratically on Georgia Avenue near Prince Philip Drive, in the Olney area of Montgomery. When officers tried to stop the car, which matched their description of Emeruwa's car, it evaded them and a pursuit began. Police said the car rammed several police cruisers and came to rest after hitting one on a nearby dead-end street. Police arrested Emeruwa, 41, and said last night that they will charge him with first-degree murder.
"It was not that long. It may just have been a couple of minutes, but it seemed like an eternity," Lt. Eric Burnett, a Montgomery police spokesman, said of the chase.
The children were inside the car and sustained no physical injury, Burnett said. He said the children would be evaluated by counselors.
"Social Services will speak to them," he said. "We don't know what they've seen."
Ochulo, a 36-year-old nurse, was stabbed in her townhouse in the 4200 block of Dunwood Terrace, said an official familiar with the investigation.
From 2003 to 2005, Ochulo filed at least three domestic violence claims against Emeruwa in Prince George's County District Court, according to summaries of the filings. Summaries of court records also show that Emeruwa was charged twice in drunken driving incidents in Montgomery County in November.

What is up with this prince George County in Maryland. Apparently PRINCE GEORGES COUNTY IN MD has highest domestic violence in the nation. Essence Magazine and 20/20 did an in depth interview with the wives.
What exactly is happening over there.
Maybe its in the water.
I hope the kids are not taken to foster care. If there are any naija family members in this country i hope they adopt them. If this man really did this to their mother - I hope he rots in jail. They are such beautiful kids.

KPOM!! I mean.. how bad could the problem be... that'd drive a man to murder his wife, the mother of his children?? Even in naija, one hardly hears of domestic issues deteriorating to such lengths; worst they'd do is exchange blows, which ofcourse isn't good either, but atleast they'd part ways with their lives. Could it be due to a dearth/absolute lack of a support system in the form of the influence of the extended family [as is the case in naija] in helping moderate domestic problems/issues, coz something's desperately going wrong in many marriages in diaspora [I'm speaking from a personal observation of failed marriages of naija acquaintances and family friends in my area, of otherwise decent folks, who quickly become bitter enemies after parting ways]. It started really bothering me when I met two naija men who were allegedly kicked out of the house by their [naija] wives [not that I'm taking sides here], as part of divorce settlement. One of them subsequently lived briefly in a homeless shelter as a result], in another case, a bobo's wife got a restraining order against him. I hear of this happening often in american marriages, but naija??? Well..

Or maybe we are reading way too much into this. I hate to see domestic abuse go deadly but it does happen. I feel for those children but it happens to all races, nationalities, & religion.

Not entirely true. Sadly, wife murder and torture are very common in naija - just ask any policeman or lawyer. In fact, the criminal law curriculum for law students in naija is full of wife murder cases. The reason why it may not seem that way is that wife murder in naija is traditionally hushed up within the family for the sake of the kids so that they don't grow up knowing thier dad killed their mum. Sometimes, such murder cases go unreported for that reason. It may also have a class dimension. Poor women from working class and rural backgrounds are more likely to be battered and murdered by their spouses - if you are not from that background, it may seem unlikely to you.
If you go to any major police station or magistrate court in a major town or city in naija, you will hear lots of domestic violence cases. If you ask me, domestic violence is even more of a problem in naija becasue the police and courts won't do much for a battered wife. The policemen are wife-beaters themselves so they will merely taunt the woman and tell her to go home and settle with the husband.

Yes, domestic violence does occur in every society and cuts across race, nationality and creed, however, one has to be concerned with the frequency with which such cases are turning deadly within the naija community in america [in particular,] these days. It's no secret that america, as a society, has become very anti-family; it leads the world in divorce and single-parenthood [compared to other developed countries, America's divorce rate is double that of France or Germany and three times that of Japan, nations where few people are religiously active in contrast to the U.S. Only England has a divorce rate comparable to the U.S., and that only since 1996.] I mean, you can say that divorce, like domestic violence, also cuts across borders, race and creed, but definitely America leads the pack, a fact that translates into serious ramifications for the average immigrant family.

Bros, I'm in no way disputing the prevalence of domestic violence in naija, my response was framed within the context of the recent spate of domestic violence cases involving naijas in america turning DEADLY. I'm merely highlighting the fact that American society presents unique cultural problems and challenges to immigrant marriages/families from more traditional/conservative milieu, such as naija. Consequently a lot of marriages fail as a result of being unable to adjust. Even rearing your child the 'naija' way can become a daunting task.

Maybe these people are meant to divorce anyway. It may not be America that is the problem but it might be the Nigerians who stay in a marriage just because of the family pressure back in Nigeria. However, once they get to America, they finally have an opportunity to leave an abusive relationship or a relationship that wasn't meant to be in the first place.
I can't count the countless time my parents have counseled naija couples going through marriage problems & I am thinking to myself, "Should this people be together if the husband finds it okay to hit his wife."
I really don't think it is America. I just think not every marriage is meant to work & some people have a hard time letting it go, especially a proud Nigerian man.

Maybe paying child support for 3 kids sent him over the edge !!
There is also this thiing with men importing their wives from Naija and later getting kicked out of the home. The men feel slighted and lost almost like how could a village girl come to the US to humiliate him.
So that could have been his frame of mind.
