Female students demand Etteh’s resignation
Written by Olumide Bajulaiye, Lagos
Wednesday, 26 September 2007
As the probe panel investigating the House of Representatives’ alleged N628m contract scam involving Speaker Olubunmi Patricia Etteh submits its report, a group of ladies under the aegis of Concerned Ladies for Good Governance (CLGG) from Nigerian tertiary institutions yesterday called on Etteh to immediately vacate her seat and resign from the House.
The speaker has been enmeshed in political crisis in the award of N628million contract for the renovation of her official residence and that of her deputy, Alhaji Babangida Nguroje.
The group while speaking in Lagos at a news conference called on the people of Osun State, particularly Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola and other prominent Yoruba leaders not to swept the allegation under the carpet, but that "they should allow justice to take its full course", calling on the president to ensure that she is removed from office.
Leader of the group, Miss. Olufunmilayo Iyanda, a student from one of the tertiary institutions in Osun State said the action of the speaker had dented the ambition of women aspiring into positions of higher authority, adding that "Madam speaker has not been a good example to us young ones.
"When Mrs. Etteh was elected as the speaker, every woman in the country was full of praises for her and believed that Nigerian women particularly the up coming ones had arrived. But to our utmost surprise, she has dashed all our hopes. She is no longer the pride of women we thought she should be".
Miss. Iyanda who expressed regret that Etteh had failed to justify the confidence reposed in her warned that any attempt by the panel to give her a clean bill of health would be resisted by women across the country.
"How else do we explain a situation where somebody would want to buy a N98million body massager when hundreds of young girls are languishing in poverty?
There are millions of unemployed ladies walking the streets of this country aimlessly without any hope of lively living.
"If mother speaker had been a virtuous woman as she claims, she would have at least donated N3 million to ladies in each state of the federation as poverty alleviation effort. Rather than doing that she preferred to buy a body massager. We call on the authorities concerned to immediately impeach her from the office".
The group also urged President Umar Musa Yar’adua to live up to his promise of fighting corruption, "whether she is guilty or not she has what the law would refer to as "intent" it is an action she intentionally desired to carry out, as such should be punished for it. She has not laid good example for us to follow, as such we cannot continue to see her as our role model".

I think it is a double standard. I have no problem with females denouncing her, she is a disgrace. My issue is that there are many men who have been doing it longer and still doing it, why was she singled out. To be honest I have not followed every detail but she bought 12 cars and renovated homes but we all have heard worse.

Sifu, men have been doing worst things till now bcos it has always been men till now-she is the first female speaker. But that is not the issue here.
Matter of fact is that Etteh is still being investigated.Evidence that filtered to the public is not helping her just like a couple of men who were not favoured as they expected in chairing the committees in the house, also formed a group that fight her, more out of their personal grudges than for transparency and good governance.
She claims to need a larger accomodation to be able to host banquets and official dinners hence the need to upgrade the house for 538 million.Cars are yet to be bought before the matter bursted out.Only 59million has been disbursed which is 25% of the contract sum. These are scanty basics of the
matter.
My issue with the girls above,is that they should have waited to see the outcome of the investigation which was actually supposed to be submitted yesterday. But guess what, the house of reps went on recess for two weeks starting from today. Before going, members recieved a Ramaddan windfall and would be expected to debate on the findings of the investigation when they come back.
Did i hear you say that two weeks is enough time for her to use in doucing the tension? Please don't think so.You hear

If the female agitators know a thing or two about Nigeria system of Government they should have known that the President of the Federal Republic does not have the power to remove the Madam Speaker from her post. That duty rests solely on the house of representative where she is Speaker or when members of her constituency successfully sign a petition to recall her from office. If you ask me, those stooges, I am puppets, no I meant to say protesters were urged along by some over zealous individuals to do their bidding for them.

This woman lack self esteem. She's been publicly disgraced and she's still fighting to stay in office.
If this had happen in the West, she would have resigned by now.

I am trying to fathom this post but to no avail. So are you saying that if it turns out that she is adjudged guilty, "female bodies" shouldn't denounce her actions just because she's female??? Am I missing something here??? What's so wrong about women denouncing the wrongful acts of other women if indeed those acts are wrong?
