A London-based businessman has been shot dead by armed robbers. The 42-year old man identified as Lugard Ogbebor, was said to have arrived the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, aboard a British airline that fateful evening.
He was picked up from the airport by Wale, the driver of his sister called Mrs. Benedicta Usen, in a Toyota Corolla car, and driven to his home at Shola Martins street, Oko-Oba, Agege, Lagos.
Unknown to him, three robbers, dressed in suits were trailing him in a black jeep.
P.M.News learnt that as soon as they arrived home and came out of the car, Ogbebor was shot in the legs, at close range, by the robbers.
The gunmen were said to have escaped with his briefcase which contained an unspecified amount of money, as well as his necklace and wristwatch.
The deceased was later confirmed dead at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, where he was rushed to.
Reacting to the incident, Mrs. Benedicta Usen, with tears rolling down her face, told P.M.News: “What a painful death! You see, before his arrival on that day, his mother, Madam Mary Ogbebor, had arrived from London few days before and was received at the airport by the deceased’s immediate elder sister, (Tina Ogbebor) and Wale, my driver.
On the day of the sad incident, I was inside preparing his meal of jollof rice.
“At 10.30p.m., we heard gun shots and we decided to switch off the lights since we did not know what was happening. I later heard a voice of a neighbour, after the robbers had left, that my brother had been shot.
“We rushed downstairs and quickly rushed him to Ayodele Hospital. They could not help us there so we left for the Ikeja General Hospital. When the doctor on duty took his pulse, he confirmed him dead.”
Mohammed, the security guard at the deceased’s home, who witnessed the incident said: “These people are so wicked. They came in a jeep and just killed this man after they had told me to lie face down.”
An uncle of the deceased, Mr. Ben Ogbebor, said: “What has he done to these bandits? They have put pains in the hearts of his British wife and their three children. How about his aged parents?
“We implore the Acting Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mike Okiro and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, to please bring his killers to book.”
It was also gathered that the robbers claimed to be senior police officers when they accosted him and asked him to surrender all he had on him. Police sources say that the robbers later abandoned the jeep.
His corpse has been deposited at the Ikeja General Hospital mortuary.
