N80m Found In Gov's Office Cashier's Account
By Emma Una/Calabar
Mrs. Glory Oqua, a cashier attached to the Cross River State Government House is now explaining to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) how she amassed the sum of N80 million, three sports utility vehicles (jeeps) and several buildings.
The cashier, who is on Level 05, has been on the job since 1999 when the former governor of the state, Mr. Donald Duke was in office. The discovery of the huge sum has led to the arrest of the former Chief of Staff to Governor Duke, Mr. James Aniyom by the EFCC.
A source said the woman is from Akpabuyo in the outskirts of Calabar.
A source told P.M.News that during the era of Aniyom as Chief of Staff, “they could withdraw up to N300 million from the bank for government use, but within a few days, she would declare that the money was finished and Jimmy would do nothing. Reports to Aniyom that the woman was stealing money from government coffers fell on deaf ears.”
The woman who is known as “chop alone” by her colleagues, was said to be stealing N5 million on the average weekly from government.
“She has three jeeps, engages a cement retail, own several buildings and provision shops spread all over the town,” said the source.
Our source added the money announced is the one discovered so far as she lodged money in several banks in different names.
The woman, who keeps a low profile during the day by driving a Toyota Tercel car to the office, is known to be very rich by those close to her.
In 2006, when one of her colleagues with whom they shared the same office reported to the then Chief of Staff the activities of the woman, rather than act, the man simply redeployed the woman who reported her to another office.
When the matter was reported to the EFCC, all the cashiers and accountants in the Government House along with the former Chief of Staff were invited to the EFCC office in Lagos.
“Some of them that were taken to Lagos have returned but those who were invited to Abuja including Jimmy are yet to come back,” our source said.
