NLC To Picket The Guardian Tomorrow
By Kazeem Ugbodaga
The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) is mobilising all its 29 affiliate trade unions to picket The Guardian newspapers for sacking its entire work force and planning to resume production on Monday.
The planned picketing will take place tomorrow in an attempt to frustrate the management’s decision to publish the newspaper.
At a joint press conference of the NLC and Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) yesterday, the two unions said they had it on good authority that The Guardian management was recruiting the same workers it had sacked earlier.
“The latest rush, we reliably gathered, was due to the ultimatum given to the management by advertisers to ensure the resumption of the publication this year, or lose their patronage.
“The latest move by the management of The Guardian is unacceptable to the NLC and the entire workers movement of this country,” said Mr. Musa Ebomhiana, NUJ Vice President, Zone G, who read the text of the joint press conference.
According to him, “for the avoidance of doubt, we state without equivocation that the latest attempt of The Guardian management is a flagrant disobedience of the law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and against the wellbeing of workers in the country and we are resolved to fight this until the management would allow reason to prevail in the conduct of business at The Guardian.
“Let us sound a note of warning to all those they are currently cajoling to come back and resume work, that they should not allow themselves to be caught in the firing line in the heated battle we foresee in our determination to bring sanity to bear in The Guardian work place.”
Ebomhiana appealed to its members to be a little patient and not allow the management to divide the rank, adding that, “we shall rally all progressive forces against this invidious action by The Guardian management.
“Let those who know them very well tell them we shall not hesitate to take this picketing to all other companies within the Ibru organisation and would continue to picket them until the management of The Guardian show its willingness to go back to the negotiation table to conclude all unfinished issues relating to this present logjam.”
Those present at the conference were NLA Assistant National Secretary, Denja Yakub and the General Secretary, NUPPPPPROW, Mr. Fatai Salami.
