A female drug peddler, Joy Ifeoma Daniel, slumped and died at the departure hall of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos on Saturday when one of the wraps of drugs she ingested burst.
Daniel, 29, was travelling to Dubai on an Ethiopian Airline flight with drugs in her stomach when she met her untimely death.
The peddler had ingested 79 wraps of narcotic drug that tested positive to cocaine weighing 1.325kg.
A statement from the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency’s Public Affairs Officer, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, on Monday said Daniel’s corpse was taken to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital where she was operated upon to evacuate the drugs from her system.
She was residing at No. 1, Ohafia Road, Ikorodu, Lagos State. Joy hails from Ukwa Local Government Area of Abia State.
The agency added that two other drug traffickers, Raymond Mamah (38) and Okonkwo Samuel (23) who also ingested drugs were also arrested by the NDLEA officers at the airport on Saturday.
Raymond was discovered through x-ray to have ingested 64 wraps of substances proved to be cocaine.
He was caught during the screening of passengers on Ethiopian Airlines from Lagos to Guangzhou in China.
Raymond, who resides at No. 14, Port-Harcourt Road, Onitsha, is a native of Obollo Eke in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The drug courier said his travail began when his goods were seized by customs officers at Seme border in 2006.
”I called my friend in Switzerland to help me with some money, but he introduced me to the person that gave me the drugs. He promised to pay me $3, 500 upon successful delivery. He was always calling me on phone. I met him only when he brought the drugs, I wish I knew him I would have exposed him,” he said fighting back tears.
Okonkwo Samuel was equally detected through x-ray to have ingested narcotic drugs.
He confessed to have ingested 90 wraps of cocaine.
Samuel was caught during the boarding of passengers on KLM flight from Lagos to Milan through Amsterdam.
He works as a cleaner in Rago Carabra, Italy where he has been living for the past two years.
Investigation revealed that Samuel came to Nigeria a fortnight ago to traffic in hard drugs.
According to him, ”My friend in Italy told me about drugs and linked me with the people. When I got to Lagos, they brought the drugs to me and I paid them $5, 000.
“The drug belongs to me and this is my first time.”
Similarly, one Onyenka Aka, 28 years, was arrested on Sunday, December 16, 2007 with 1.150kg of cannabies concealed with bitter leaf vegetable in his luggage.
He was travelling to Karachi in Pakistan on Emirate flight when he was nabbed. Onyeka resides at No. 9, Karonwi Street, Itire Surulere.
He hails from Ogbenike town in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The cases are under investigation.
