Thumbs down Plea for Ghanaian woman's return

Ama Sumani was taken from a Cardiff hospital on Wednesday where she has been receiving dialysis after cancer damaged her kidneys.

Ms Sumani, 39, whose visa has expired, says she cannot afford care in Ghana.

High Commissioner Annan Cato urged the government on Radio Four's The World Tonight to allow her back to the UK.

He said the decision to deport her was regrettable and he appealed to the UK, which he said he considered to be a "very compassionate country".

Mr Cato said: "Even now don't think it is too late for them to reconsider position to allow her to come back and receive treatment. I would appeal to them to do so

BBC NEWS | Wales | Plea for Ghanaian woman's return

Dis is just disheartening for me to read. At least, the Ghanian High Commission is speaking about it. Trust my beautiful Naija, no one would even give a toss.

I read this yesterday in the news and I was just speechless. They even took her out in a wheelchair, that should have been enough reason for her to be allowed to stay. What else do they need. Who else on earth needs to be there more than she.

very touching indeed. i pray the british govt reconsiders their stand on her situation or better still the ghanian govt shd take over her care since the facilities needed for her treatment are all there in ghana. afterall, charity begins at home. let africa learn to nurture its own also.

At least, there's still hope.

Thumbs down

I am sorry the woman is going thru all that turmoil. But let us be honest with ourselves for a change as these people are sick and tired of us always falling on them for help while they know how our officials are spending our countries money carelessly. Seriously, if Ghana is not prepared to treat its citizens, why should another country care? In the UK, the official’s don’t spend $33m of the Tax-Payer's money on a birthday party like they do in Ghana. They buy the dialysis equipment in order to treat their sick patients free of charge on the NHS.

Ghana uses its $33m to buy Mercedes Benz, BMWs etc!! Tweeeeeeeeeeeaaa!!!

Next time, Mr Cato should tell his greedy officials and colleagues that instead of sharing $33m amongst themselves, they should consider the plight of others such as Ms Sumani and make allowances for their needs as well.

If that is the case, why don't we send all our sick to Britain at the expense of the British NHS? NONSENSE!!!!!

Samira even though I don't necessarily disagree with you, I must emphasize my disappointment at this barbaric and inhuman treatment of this lady by the British authorities. To deport someone who's already undergoing medical treatment at a hospital for a life threatening illness is despicable to say the least. And I can assure you a number of MPs share the same view.
By the way, the British Home Office usually grant people indefinite leave to remain in the UK on compassionate & humanitarian grounds. How on earth did this poor lady fail to qualify on such grounds is beyond me.
If a poor lady suffering from a life threatening illness cannot get indefinite on compassionate grounds, I don't know who can.

It may have appeared barbaric and inhuman treatment to you and some, but this is exactly what happens when a group of people have made it a bad habit of relying on others for DECADES! When are we Africans also going to take responsibility of our own? Are we always going to depend on others? I am sure thousands of ghanaians are being treated by the British govt for FREE each year....how long do you think they can afford to do this? after a while people do get sick and tired you know...and I do not blame them! It is not as if she was going to die the very next day and the british still deported her...That will have been a different case!

This is NO LONGER A LESSON LEARNT FOR US! We deserve to be treated this way. It may sound harsh to you but what you and I should start saying to our government is ENOUGH is ENOUGH! Cut the pointing fingers abeg. The problem starts from us and it will remain so if we continue pointing fingers!

I was astonished by the request of the Ghana High Commissioner to the UK pleading for the Ghanaian woman needing dialysis to be allowed back into the UK. What a frigging disgrace! This to me typifies the Ghanaian mentality. If this woman could only have this treatment in the UK, I could understand the intervention of the High Commissioner. I believe she could have the treatment at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital but was refused on the grounds that she does not have the means to pay. But guess what, it is not only a matter of not being able to pay, the hosiptal is currently not in the right shape to assist her in any way. They do not have the necessary equipments for the patients and this is sad to me as Ghana as borrowed more than a billion dollars to still be in this horrible state!

Instead of the High Commissioner pleading for her return to the UK, should he not be pleading with the President of Ghana to ensure the unfortunate lady gets her treatment in Ghana, her native land? It appears only the rich can afford the best treatment and even that, most of them go outside the country for medical care. That says alot about the people governing the country. They continue to borrow millions of dollars to fix the country but the main hosipital in Ghana looks more like the morgue!

I do not think the High Commissioner should pass the responsibility in this instance to the British tax payer. Perhaps he might consider using his good offices to help the lady or even set a good example by making a substantial contribution towards the cost of her treatment then maybe, others may follow.

Africans have to learn to be self sufficient and African governments should be helping the poor and the needy in Africa more than they seem prepared to do. This is certainly NOT about the BRITISH but about US (AFRICANS).

Funmo, my aunty just died last month...why you will wonder....she died of fibrous. The main hospital Korle bu was useless to her as the equipments were not available. So she went to a private doctor as they have some of the equipments...Somehow, he did something wrong during her surgery to remove it and she kept going back for check up as her tummy kept extending but he couldn't determine what was wrong...sadly, she died.
