A nineteen year -old deaf and dumb mother, Victoria Chukwuma, has appealed to well- meaning Nigerians to come to the aid of her one year- old daughter, who is on the verge of losing her both hands if nothing is done to save her.
As a matter of fact, Victoria Chukwuma's case is not new in Daily Sun. The story of the 19 year- old young mother of two who was raped twice and impregnated by some randy men who took advantage of her deformity was first published in Daily Sun of March 26, 2007.
.However, while the innocent girl has decided to take her destiny in her hands and is taking care of her two innocent daughters, Grace, who was born on January, 8 2005, and Chiamaka, born January 4, 2007 respectively, she fell into yet another tragedy, when her little girl dipped her hands into a bucket of hot water.
Chiamaka, who just clocked one, is in big trouble and if she doesn’t get help, may end up loosing her two hands. Chiamaka, Victoria’s little innocent baby was said to have sometime in October last year dipped her tiny hands into a bucket of hot water placed around the kitchen area of their uncompleted building apartment in Karu, a satellite town in Abuja.
Narrating the baby’s ordeal to Daily Sun in their home, Victoria’s younger sister, Blessing, told of how Chiamaka, who was so full of life, healthy and played around the house and even started walking at just seven months old, had suddenly become a shadow of her self. The once vibrant baby can no longer crawl, talk less of playing around the house with fellow children.
All she does is cry all day owe to the excrutiating pain that she is going through. All they now do is tie her on the back. The sad incident that may lead to the baby’s deformity if nothing is done, happened after the dumb and deaf mother, who also help her mother run their food business, boiled some cocoyam with which she wanted to use to cook the soup, poured out the hot water from the pot into a bucket and went to the other side of the house to peel off the skin of the cocoyam for pounding.
But unknown to her, her little baby, who had been outside playing with some children in the neighbourhood, suddenly returned and crawled to where the bucket of death was kept and thinking that the steam from the hot water may be good to play with, dipped her two little hands right inside the hot water. Chiamaka, according to Blessing, screamed immediately she dipped her hands into the hot water and cried for help.
Perhaps if only she knew that removing her hands immediately from the bucket of hot water immediately would save her, may be she would have. But the little baby kept crying for help with her two little hands still dipped into the bucket, and got none. Unfortunately, even her mother, who was standing not too far away from the scene of the accident could not hear the cry of her baby because of her deformity, thus, Chiamaka’s hands remained in the hot water until a neighbour, who had come out to throw some dirt, heard the baby crying profusely and went to find out what was wrong, only to find that she was in danger and immediately removed her hands from the bucket and took her to the mother.
The deaf and dumb mother on discovering what had happened, immediately took her to the ECWA hospital, in company of her younger where the baby was attended to and given some medication. She said few days after the incident, they hands started to swell and they took her back to another hospital, where they gave them another medication to apply on the hands but that rather than improving, the situation got worse.
Not knowing what else to do and the fact that they don’t have much money on them, they decided to visit a nurse in their neighbourhood that works in one of the general hospital, who gave them honey and some other kind of drug to on the wound, while they took her to the woman’s house three times a week for cleaning and dressing of the wound, which at that time had started smelling terribly.
While this was going on, a good Samaritan according to her, took pity on the little child and offered to help and took them to a hospital somewhere in Benue State, but on getting there, they were told that the white man that runs the place had gone on vacation. Not knowing what to do, Victoria returned with her baby and started applying the honey given to her by the said nurse, but rather than improvement, the hands keeps getting worse by the day.
As if that was not enough, when Victoria decided to visit the hospital, where the nurse works to see a doctor, the nurse on sighting her, told her not to bother that her case was beyond what the hospital can handle and asked her to go back home. Victoria, who says she has been traumatized since after the incident, is crying for help from well meaning Nigerians to come to the aid of her little girl.
