The mother of Damilola Taylor, the schoolboy stabbed to death in London seven years ago, has died of a suspected heart attack.
Gloria Taylor, 57, had become an oustpoken campaigner for underprivileged young people since the death of her 10-year-old son.
She collapsed while out walking with her her husband Richard Taylor in south-east London last night.
Their son bled to death in a stairwell on the run-down North Peckham esate in south London after he was stabbed in the leg with a broken beer bottle.
The Nigerian-born schoolboy had been in the UK only a few months and his death came to symbolise the problem of violent youth crime, propelling the issue to the top of the political agenda.
Mrs Taylor and her husband susbequently launched the Damilola Taylor Trust with the aim of preventing young people turning to crime.
The Damilola Taylor youth centre in Peckham was opened by then Prime Minister Tony Blair.
Mrs Taylor once described how she wanted her son’s death to mean "hope, life and opportunity for Britain's downtrodden and underprivileged youth."
She said: "Damilola lost his life because of enormous problems in this society. Our son wanted to be a doctor.
"He was a leader and we are sure he would have been extraordinary. We would like the trust to heal many of the ills faced by today's youth."
Mrs Taylor and her husband also had to endure many disappointments as they sought justice for their son.
After police mistakes and three long trials teenage street robbers Danny and Ricky Preddie were eventually found guiltyof Damilola's manslaughter and jailed for eight years at the Old Bailey in 2006.
Labour Party deputy leader Harriet Harman, the MP for Camberwell and Peckham, called Mr Taylor today to express her sympathy.
A Home Office spokesman said: "We are very sorry to hear of the death of Gloria Taylor. Gloria was an important part of the Damilola Taylor Trust, working hard in the fight against knife crime.
"Our thoughts are with Richard Taylor and his family at this difficult time."
Solicitor Neil O'May, who has worked with the Taylors since Damilola's killing, said he was shocked by Mrs Taylor's sudden death.
He said: "Gloria was known to be wholly devoted to Damilola, her children and her family.
"Everyone who knew her well found her enormous integrity and deep warmth enormously invigorating."
He added: "She was remarkably strong, remarkably cool, in her belief that justice should be done. She lived with tremendous dignity and integrity."
