Exclamation 21 Nigerian Stalls shut in Ghana!

No fewer than 21 shops belonging to Nigerians living in Ghana, had been shut since November, 2007, a Nigerian diplomat has said.

Mr Linus Ameh, an official of Nigeria High Commission in Accra. Ghana, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the businesses were closed over failure to comply with the country'slaw on retail trading.

He said Ghanaian authorities had imposed strict conditions on foreigners wishing to engage in retail trading.

"Their law says foreigners cannot participate in the local retail business except they have an equity capital of $300,000 (N35.4 millon), and employ at least five Ghanaians.

"Most Nigerian businessmen cannot meet this requirement," he said, adding that Ghana Investment Promotion Council set up a Task force to verify the businesses that had not met up the requirements.

Ameh said, however, many of the affected traders had petitioned the National Assembly, ECOWAS and presidency in Abuja, seeking for intervention.

Nigerian professionals in Accra had also scheduled a meeting with the country's Minister of Trade, to discuss the issue.

According to him, businesses affected by the closure include those engaged in the sale of second hand clothing, pharmaceuticals and spare parts. The diplomat described the conditions as too stringent and unrealistic and called on Nigerians residing in Ghana to follow the requirement of ECOWAS by registering their businesses at the Ministry of Commerce, to avoid embarrassment.

This is a great insight on the side of Ghana govt, they kind of reminisce about the inflation that befell the country years ago and decide to put a stop to it.
Also Nigerian's in Ghana should understand that what works here may not work in another place, they should then be a contributor to a growing economy and not otherwise.

"Ghana must go!"
Can we still say that again?! Hmmmm.....

The number of Nigerians in Ghana is overwhelming!! The other day I went to the Net Cafe, one loud yoruba guy was belching his language from one corner! At least the hausas can blend in cos Ghana has hausa tribe asd well (I learnt they came from Nigeria back in the day sha). Am I so glad I speak hausa so well? hee hee hee

Ghana is lovely, 24 hr light, good roads, nice people etc......We are all ECOWAS. But I have an issue with the recent spate of armed robbery attacks and 419 going on there, by, you know who - NIGERIANS!!! Why cant our people keep their crookedness in one corner? Why bring armed robbery and what nots to Ghana?

NIGEIRANS, abeg, do neat and legit businesses there, because U will make it hard for others with good intentions very soon.
And I hope we dont get to the point when Ghanaians will create a stripped bag and call it "NIGERIANS MUST GO"! Because, Ghana is my new home, and am loving it here!!!

Angelsty! Akwaaba.Hope you enjoy Ghana, its a great place. And I agree with you 100%..the number of yahoozee boys in Accra at the moment is alarming. Its very common to be in a cafe and think you're back in lagos or Aba, with our bros doing deals..Then the police show up to raid and carry some away for questioning..its really bad and is creating such a bad rep for the legit naija business men here.Quite sad

There are laws that are strictly adhered to here, and those coming in need to understand. They come down hard on foreign companies, so you need to adhere to the rules, or face constant harrasment from the task force,AMAA etc.

Tax is another issue, you will pay whether you like am or not, cos the IRS will be on you like white on rice, and the stipends are quite high, but that's the way it is, so there is no escape...just abide by the laws and you'll be ok

Every country has it dos and donts. If you want to live in such country peacefully, Abide by their laws. Nigerians shoud borrow a leaf from Ghana. Maybe we don't have to be in everybodys space-country. And be treated with some respect. Ghana is not ready to be turned to Nigeria by some lawless few. Good for them. 24hrs light. Hmmm the average Nigerian dream .

For posterity, the ninteenth century will be the period in which Europe was gripped by a wave of lust. It became a competition to see who could penetrate the farthest. Who cares if the victim brutally robbed of her virginity remained marked for the rest of her life?
