Transcorp Telecom Workers Stage Strike, Shut Gateway
Transnational Corp (Transcorp) said workers at its Nigerian Telecommunications Ltd. have gone on strike, shutting down one of Nigeria's main international telecommunications gateways.
The work stoppage is affecting international telephone and data traffic, Adedayo Ojo, a spokesman for TransCorp, said in an e-mailed statement today from Lagos, the commercial capital. It is unclear who arranged the strike and what the reason is. The company yesterday paid more than 500 million naira ($4.26 million) in salary arrears, Ojo said.
The employees proceeded to blockade the SAT-3 facility which is Nigeria's international telephony gateway,'' said Ojo, referring to the Nigerian node of the underwater fiber-optic cable that links Africa with Europe and the rest of the world.
