Some of the comments after the article make for good reflection though...what does having the most degrees amount to for your native country or the communities as a whole. if it doesnt have much impact, then the success is individualistic and should be applauded as such

Where is our Apple,Sony,BMW,Siemens,Bill Gates, and Steve Job?Very good questions.
Where are they?
It is not about collecting degrees, but it is all about what you do with them to impact positively in your own community/state/country/continent/planet.

These people are so pathetic. They hate any ethnic group that are more successful than them. One minute they hate Jewish people for having money, next is Mexican people, later it will be Arabs.

There comes a time when you look at yourself and wonder what is lacking in me that makes me less successful than immigrants who come with $20 and a dream. It is called laziness and bitterness and lazy and bitter people are never successful.

Spend less energy bombing other countries or supporting "Bubba the President" and maybe, just maybe, you will achieve something in life.

Well,
I guess it is the case of seeing the glass half empty or half full. I see it half full. How we see ourselves is very important. Chinese came into America, worked hard and achieved yet china in many areas is still poor. I doubt they dogged themselves and called their achievements worthless because their home country is struggling.
No achievement is a waste. If we Nigerian abroad excel it will only bring pride to the future generations, respect from other cultures and eventually can influence the mother land.
Let's not forget that many Nigerians go home and are creating something. As I said half empty or half full. The Nigeria I know now is not the one I left from high school. A middle class is up. We will get there.
Having multiple degrees help. Whether you work in your field or not you can only get more enlightened as you study more. Also I know lots of Nigerians working in their fields and controlling their departments. Whenever they are challenged by others and they are, their knowledge is undeniable and the voices or attitudes are silenced.
We have invented things. I have a friend who is one of the major inventors of fresh technologies in a German company. But ofcourse the German company gets the credit.
Our government has not created an atmosphere where the creative blossom. But we all can do our part. Get those degrees, work and excel. Be the head and not the tail. Be proud to be Nigerian and make your money with the attitude of making a difference in your generation.
If you ever make millions remember you can support those inventors back home that are struggling in their labs alone. Do that irrespective of tribe. We don't need our govt. After all in America, these inventors are many time supported by private foundations.
Aaah - inventors please continue. God willing, someone will step up and financially support you. It could even one day be me.

That is not the reason why people go to school!!!! Please let us not get education twisted... I am abt to go for a PhD because I want to eventually teach in a 4 year college and the only way you can do that is mostly with a PhD. Am I going back to Nigeria to teach? No.. If I am called to be aguest professor to teach for at least a week, will I go? Yes.. But dont say that its not about collecting degrees or gettin a degree.. For all I care, EVERY WOMAN should have a 4 year college degree whether or not you decide to sell your breasts and die for your country

Ok o!But my own view is that this particular news is an empty one.It earns us little or no global respect, let us not deceive ourselves about this.
The civlizations we built with our own hands, are what we will be judged by,and not all the useless degrees we are piling up as people.
Knowledge is good, yes, but using it positively to help build our own motherland to a high exalted status amongst developed nations is way better, and only by that will we be judged.Anything else is self delusion and self agrandisement.
Every time we introduce ourselves as nigerians, the image of a decaying country that is Nigeria jumps into people's minds. So what is the use of all these degrees if this is all we can project in people's minds.People with degrees, but with wasted enlightenment.
The news that is way better than this one would be, NIGERIA HAS NOW ACHIEVED A MODERN,DEVELOPED, INDUSTRIALIZED NATION STATUS.Now wouldn't that be something.

...and what is your gauge for success? Don't make me laugh! It's these same people that created the same universities where people like you and I go to study to earn our degrees, isn't it? How then do you suddenly become more successful than them? Who are the ones still judging how far you go in their soceity? I laugh.

I guess Bill Gates isn't successful, afterall he didn't obtain that ever so important degree to make him successful, right?

Education is knowledge, not necessarily success. Yes, you may have achieved a personal success by completing your studies but without that degree having an impact on the soceity, it's a big waste of time to me.

Take a look at the computer you're typing from right now, who made it? An Adamu? Non, it's either a smith or a Banks, yet you call yourself succesful? Show me your success, your paper on the wall that aknowledges your completion? And I wonder who it was that handed this degree to you...hmm...

Except of course you studied in Obafemi Awolowo university which if i'm not forgetting wouldn't have been in existence at all if the whites haven't come to civilise you so to speak. Ha! I tire for Naija!

Gat to go, meeting calls. Should be back soon.

Vince, going to college and getting a degree even multiple degrees is a personal accomplishment.. You dont have to go to school to help your country.. You go to school to advance and better yourself at least thats what I try to preach.. Now I don't know who introduces themselves as Nigerians and what jumps into people's minds is a decaying country.... Where I am, It is very commendable when we say we are Nigerians because the next thing they say is "You all are so smart and so educated" Nigeria's rot is not the doing of people going to college and getting a degree and refusing to come back home to help.. Its corruption and greed of the government and individuals alike..

Today if you pack and go to Nigeria and you dont have your shyt together, trust me, you will bring yourself right back to where you are.. People don't realize that to up and leave a working system (constant supply of electricity, good roads, ability to dial 911 if shyt was happening, good schools that stay open) an going to one that has major flaws can cause serious frustrations.. Let us not decieve ourselves.. Now can we help to make Nigeria better? Yes.. but we have start from where we are.. Look at Nigerians in America.. they cant even get along and do stuff together without yawa gassing.. Look at our village conventions and meetings and see how people be fighting and not let the young ones voice thier opinions without them saying you are insulting your elders.. My dear.. It has to begin from our community here and then we become a strong voice and then we can go home and be a strong voice and they back at home will respect what we have to say..

My own 3 kobo! :-)

It might be self-delusional to you but not self-delusional to others. We all agree our country needs help but why should we hide our other achievements.

You have Americans, who happen to be BIGGEST SCAMMERS, telling you are nothing because your country is nothing and it is a big shame when we have Nigerians who are agreeing with them.

You are entitled to your opinion but this is a great achievement whether you think so or not.

I would like to know, how have you, as your status as a NIGERIAN, have helped Nigeria get to a better place since you think it is very easy?

My point exactly..and so be it..nothing to beat our chests about as a collective nigerian effort, cos it doesnt translate to national success, its individual success and should be applauded as such, nothing more.

Well,i guess i am a selfless community animal.I measure success by collective achievements and not the individual or personal ones.Well, that is just my nature,i guess. It is what one achieves with the collective that is vastly more important, than what one achieves personally.
I guess Nigeria as a nation finds itself in such a hellhole because it does not have too many citizens who place th collective over the personal.
Everybody is engrossed with the personal, and none is with the collective. No people can build a vibrant nation by placing the personal achievements over the collective.IMHO.

Really, you really think Bill Gates will spend his time complaining about Nigerians on a computer? You, don't make me laugh.

Yes, "Bubba" from Texas created Universities. I guess he was doing this in between lynching black people and stealing Mexicans' land.

You are one of the black people who think he has been saved by the "white man". How sad for you. You are one of the "brainwashed" black people who still thinks "White" equates "God". Black people, including Nigerians, have added nothing to society, right?

Yes, please go serve your white master. I am sure the cotton field is calling you.
