Man kills co-tenant over chair

By MATTHEW DIKE
Thursday, July 17, 2008

Police detectives in Lagos are currently trying to unravel the motives behind the killing of a 28-year old father of two, Mr. Samuel Nwogha, by his co-tenant, Julius Njoku, on July 1.

Njoku, an electrician, was said to have severely bitten both Nwogha and his wife, Ndidi, before stabbing the husband to death with a screw driver at their house on Nwanmah Street, Ajegunle, Lagos. The suspect has since been picked up by the police.

While the deceased and his wife lived in a rented one-room apartment in the house, his suspected killer resided with the landlord simply identified as Coach.

Daily Sun gathered that the cause of the quarrel, which eventually resulted in Nwogha’s painful death, was a kitchen chair.

The deceased’s wife, Ndidi, told Daily Sun that she was using the kitchen chair when Njoku suddenly seized it from her. An attempt to wrest the chair from Njoku, she said, earned her a slap and a bite that left a deep cut in her hand.

The mother of a two-year old girl said her husband had rushed out of their one-room apartment to broker peace between both parties. The suspect was however said to have continued assaulting the woman, a development that warranted Nwogha to come to his wife’s aid. In the process, Njoku was said to have bitten the deceased.

"After Njoku had bitten my husband, my husband wanted to go for medical treatment to treat the injury. But unknown to my husband, Njoku went to collect a screw driver. He chased my husband and stabbed him from behind and the screw driver went in all the way. After stabbing him, he pulled out the screw driver and disappeared into thin air", the woman lamented.

According to her, policemen from Layeni Division arrived the scene within few minutes and rushed the victim to a nearby hospital along Ojo road, Ajegunle, where he died within an hour.

She also told Daily Sun that she got married to her late husband in 2006. She described her husband as a gentle, peaceful, loving and caring man who could never hurt a fly while he lived.

"His death will take all the brightness and happiness out of my life. I cannot imagine this. It is still like a dream," she said.

The bereaved young woman said she would ask her husband’s killer a question if they eventually meet. Said she: "This man actually wanted to kill my husband, not injure him. If I see the suspect I will ask him what I did to him to warrant killing my husband. My husband was not even fighting this man. But he murdered my husband in cold blood. But I know he would die by the sword one day.

Ndidi said her husband’s killer was squatting with the landlord since the death of his elder brother who was a tenant in the house.

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Layeni Division of the Nigeria Police, L. F. Williams, a Chief Superintendent of Police, was said to have invited the landlord immediately Njoku died. It was through the landlord’s children that the police got a tip-off about the whereabouts of the suspect. He was immediately picked up.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Frank Mba, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, confirmed the story. He said the body has since been deposited at a public mortuary for autopsy.
