Thread: All Nigerians are Corrupt - Oprah Winfrey

Did anyone of y'all read the recent the statement attributed to Oprah Winfrey, that ALL Nigerians, regardless of their education level, are corrupt. And she went on to call the United States govt to sever all ties with Nigeria on ground of corruption.

It is unfortunate that somebody of her calibre is muddled in a clear case of universal indictment of a country.Her good judgement is surely on vacation!!
How would she fell if one concludes that Americans are all base heads knowing,that she,like many others did drugs,prostitution and are victims of domestic child-abuse among other low life experiences?!!

...oprah why now

I have always known this woman is a goat....how can u say something so ignorant... clear case that brains or common sence is not bought in the market.

Tell me about it! Generalizations and stereotyping is one of the reason why there is no unity in our world. Can she generalize her fellow akatas like that? Abeg, make we leave matter.

Exactly my point my dear, its not her fault ooohh at all. Cos pple give her the chance to advise them on stuff she dont know"ish" about.

How can the "anu pam" be giving women advice on marriage, kids etc...When she doesnt even have a kobo of experince on these issues.....

Infact let me leave this "ewu" cos things like this boil my blood esp. as it regards those hard working nigerians, who are a lot out there.

Wait oh!! Did anyone hear of this before this tiny punch article? From any other source?!? And I mean, any, US, Nigeria, BBC any? Even another Nigerian newspaper would be good... We can't just go off on this one tiny article....

It is not a news report by a reporter. It's some sort of essay from some dude... Where did he hear that Oprah said any of those things?

Recently, America’s TV girl, Oprah Winfrey, called on America to sever diplomatic relationships with world’s topmost corrupt countries.

Worst of all the countries, Oprah surmised, is Nigeria.

According to her, “all Nigerians – regardless of their level of education – are corrupt.”

It is very pathetic that Oprah could ascribe to a larger population, the evil act of an insignificant number of persons in the world’s most populous black nation.

Oprah’s conclusion is based on the fact that a Nigerian of Igbo extraction was caught with $500,000, which was alleged to have been stolen from a foreigner through the Internet fraud popularly known as 419.

Oprah had sponsored an hour-long programme, which ran for several days on the CNN, with the sole aim of exposing the clever tricks espoused by this group of Nigerians to con their victims.

Much has been said about the greed of the victims themselves, and I need not say more about it.

However, at a time when Americans are committing heinous crimes against children and women, nobody has tagged all Americans as murderous.

So, why call all Nigerians rogues because of the sin of a few bad eggs?

Oprah regularly tells her life story: how she was sexually abused by close relations, how she ‘walked the streets’ (Americans’ euphemism for prostitution), etc., but nobody has ever deemed it fit to tag all American men as incestuous because of Oprah and others’ experiences.

She did drugs – just like the typical American teenager, but nobody has cast all American youths in the mould of drug abusers!

So, why should an individual that is supposed to know better sentence a nation to odium for the infraction of a tiny fraction of its population?

I urge Oprah and her likes to disabuse their minds about Nigerians.

Be wary of requests for money from strangers, and if you fall for a scam, blame your greed and not Nigerians.

If these quotes were taken from the show about 419 that aired some months ago, well I have to say this is completely wrong. she did show case some of these issues going on about 419, but i can't recollect her ever calling all Nigerians corrupt. I think she is too smart to make such generalization. For now I reserve my comment until we get to the truth of this matter.

I was watching judge Judy A few days ago Judging two friends which one of then was sending money to some pple in Nigeria Befiore she pass her judgement. She warn the pple not to send their money to Nigeria. And she don't
want any mail or call from anybody over this issue. Sometimes You feel that it is our pple that make us to get Insulted by these pple. The dirt is so much all the Idiots Insult our country by calling us 419ers.

Exactly! I watched that show as well and she never made that statement.... Now does she feel that way? I don't know, but she definitely did to say the comment that guy put in quotes.

i saw the show and i can also testify that oprah did not generalize that all nigerians irrespective of their education ...et el..... are 419....come to think about it oprah would never say such a thing.......... the piece up there just got me confused ....

I also saw the show........and at the end.......she made sure to say, that she knew she would be getting a lot of correspondence from Naija people saying she was tarring our good name, and continued by saying that she knows not all Nigerians are bad and cut out of the same linen, and that, that particular episode was not intended to show Nigerians in a bad light.........but just to make people aware of the Scam epidemic.....; A disclaimer of sorts if you may!

We shouldnt come to conclusions off of some unkwown writer's base assumptions................
