Kennis Music signs new Act

By Ayeni Adekunle

With 2face Idibia and Sound Sultan planning their upcoming albums on their own labels, it is not surprising that Nigeria’s foremost label Kennis music, has sought out a new talent to call the label home.

A reliable source told E-Punch that Kennis has signed a recording contract with US-based Nigerian singer, Kelly Hansome, whose new single Maga Don Pay, is currently finding its way into music circles across the country.

The deal was signed during Keke Ogungbe and Dayo Adeneye’s last visit to the United States.

Kelly Hansome, a singer-producer, was largely unknown in mainstream music circles until now. Before his recent relocation to America, he was a Lagos-based producer.

Sources say he had worked with the defunct Plantashun Boiz, and produced a couple of tracks on the group’s 2007 failed reunion album (Plan B).

Maga Don Pay is seen in some quarters as sequel to Olu Maintain’s Yahoozey. That’s because on the song, he talks about his maga finally paying up, as he jumps up and gives thanks to God. Maga is regarded in street parlance as mugun – Yoruba word for a ‘foolish victim,’ especially in case of advance fee fraud. But, according to those close to Hansome, maga in the musical context means a ‘‘helper; whomever God uses to answer your prayers, meet your needs.’’ Kennis CEO, Keke Ogungbe, belongs to the second group.

He also plays the maga in the song’s video which made a debut on TV last week.

‘‘Yes, we’re working with him (Kelly Hansome) right now’’, Ogungbe told E-Punch in a chat last week. We’ll be making this public soon, and we’re already working on his album,’’ adds Ogungbe, who made his debut as a music video director with Hansome’s Maga Don Pay.

Kelly, born Kelechi Hansome, was a student of Madonna University in Nigeria, before he dropped out of school, using his school fees to shoot two videos before finally relocating to the United States.

I met this young man recently, and he gave me his CD....I must say I was and still am quite taken with it. I like the CD a lot. Although the one mentioned here is being fronted as the first single; I am not crazy about it, I like the other ones more; He has some nice, upbeat, "shake your groove thang" tracks; and I like the way he mixes Igbo, pidgin and english in the songs, and from my understanding, he mixed and produced the whole thing....I cant post the songs here, as I would like to get his permission!

I wouldnt judge him too hastily y'all!

Poor track to be his first single coming out of Kennis Music Label... As compare to his other songs, this is or might be rated the lowest.

Come on people, will this a competition to Tuface???

The judgment here is based on what is made available here, and not what we haven't heard. By the time he hear something diffrent, the judgment will follow a new order.
But so far, if e no be panadol............ lol.
