I believe he retired cos he can no longer play at the top level in Europe anymore. Some players (like Paul Ince) usually go down to the lower divisions when they can't play at the top level, but others prefer to retire or quit the game entirely.
He's a great player and he'll be remembered for his contribution to African football.
I will never forget his thunderbolt against Spain at the 1998 world cup in France. What a rocket. That goal is one of the best goals ever scored in a world cup and the fact that it was the winning goal so late in the game, shows how important it was. I wish good luck in all his future endeavours.
