I've just finished watching the Portugal versus Holland match and I'm still wondering why Marco Van Basten (the Holland coach) didn't bring on Ruud Van Nistelrooy. He's a good player and an excellent finisher. How can he choose to bring on Vennegor Of Hessellink and leave Ruud on the bench? Mistakes like Van Basten's usually decide games you know.

No he wasn't. He was eligible to play this match and he was on the bench. Marco Van Basten criticised his performances in the tournament, that's why he decided to leave him out. It had nothing to do with the yellow card he picked up cos it was a single yellow card and it had been cancelled by FIFA.

Well I think he made a mistake. Even Ronaldo wasn't playing well for Brazil but the coach gave him another chance and he scored 2 goals against Japan.
Why didn't Van Basten give Ruud another chance?

BTW, Van Basten was one of the greatest goalscorers in world football and I expect him to know that players (especially goalscorers) sometimes go through bad spells. He went through them himself as a player.
