And I said yesterday that Henin will beat Venus.

Well its all over folks.Henin and Federer are the Queen and King at Flushing Meadows

Henin beat Kudznetsova in 2 straight sets (6:1/6:3), winning the 7th Grand slam of her career

Oga Federer beat Djokovic in 3 straight sets ( 7:6/7:6/6:4) winning the 12th grand slam title of his great career. He's just 2 grandslams behind Pete Sampras. Once he surpasses Sampras's record, I will be happy and will start supporting the likes of Nadal and Djokovic.

Djokovic's the man to watch for, it was a tight game, with the firt 2 sets going to a tie break.

This is KinkyMuffin reporting from Flushing Meadows for the last.See y'all next year at the Aussie open.

Roll on the Masters for the rest of the year!!!!

Federer rules. I watched this guy again on saturday, i.e. the semi-finals and I must say, he is class!!!

I have no doubt in my mind that he is the greatest all-round player of all times!

With the exception of clay, Nadal has that covered.

Yes, but the fact that Federer even makes the finals of clay tournament sshow he's the most well-rounded player of all time. Even the likes of greats like Sampras never mastered clay, even at the peak of his career

I am happy for Federer and I think Henin deserves her crown too

I feel ya. We're privileged to have legends like Fedex in our time. He's the only player that can easily change the course of a game whenever he wants. It's funny, sometimes he plays as though he's not even interested -- intentionally throwing away points -- and the next minute he tells ya not to take his nonchalance for granted. Who else comes from love-40 to break many times in a game? Or 0-5 in tiebreaks to 8-6??

Maybe Federer has the ability to belittle them, no matter how mentally/physically strong they come off? Either that or we just have more wimps today than those days.

He's right to some extent, but it takes little away from Federer's success. Seeing as they are great players on the circuit who just crumble when they face him. Its a good argument but one that is self serving cos Fed is hot on his heels for Grand slams.

Its actually a good argument, but Sampras should just be gracious to the young man for his achievemnets in this era. My big sis loved Pete when he was on top, and so I avidly watched an interview he gave years later on one of these sports channels. He was asked how it felt to be measured up to the great Ron Laver and I'll never forget his response:

" He was a great player, but I believe my achievements went well beyond that, and I would like to consider myself as the greatest" a.k.a I'm way better than him so why compare My jaw dropped to the floor..even if its true why would you be so arrogant and say that!!!!

SO I'm not surprised Sampras says so...he does have a good point, todays tennis doesnt seem to have enough players to make it so competitive like in his day, but he's forgotten that Federe met the likes of Agasii and co and showed then he was the new man on the block, so he's paid his dues too!!

But coming from Sampras nah bad belle dey worry am..he doesnt want anyone to smell his record! And Fed is very close!

I also think Pete should be more gracious. And there is something to the fact that maybe Roger is taking the slams away from the present players. Roddick would have won multiple slams and maybe Nadal would have a Wimbledon title who knows.

but...

When you compare the competition, it's not close. Sampras played much, much tougher competition.

Agassi in his prime, was better than Nadal.
Rafter would have been able to best Roddick

Although it is tough to compare different eras, this one was recent. Hell there were players like Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Micheal Chang and Goran Ivanišević, who all were great, great players usually bested by Agassi (who has won on all surfaces) and Sampras (All time slams record holder).. Men's tennis was no joke. You met 5 setters all over the place...

So although I wish Pete should just graciously allow the record to be broken, like Bjorn Borg, who won 5 Wimbledon titles with McEnroe, Conners and Ivan Lendel in the mix, he does have a valid point...

Very true, and the 5-setters actually exist in this era as well, but arent focused or mentally strong to beat him. They could if they put their minds to it. The likes of Djokovic, Nadal,Ferrer, Bagdatis et al. are fighters and play damn good tennis. They should follow through when they play him so that we get some good competition in the ATP. Sampras has a very valid point, but then again..........
