Angels... for the sake of African Women

ANOTHER reality television show is set to debut on the small screen soon.
One of the unique things about the oncoming reality show, Mr. Donatus Oleka, one of the initiators said, is that Angels would portray the African woman and her virtues to the outside world.

A brain child of GBL Audio-visual, a Radio and TV content provider outfit based in Lagos, Oleka revealed that 21 episodes of Angels is expected to be aired in its first season and will showcase young ladies as they are put through "real-life" challenges. The show will feature tasks and assignment to the contestants, exposition of spectacular tourist and cultural landmarks of Nigeria, and it will also offer the viewing public participation in the show.

"Each day, the contestants would navigate through a series of tasks in an effort to bring their talent and adaptability to their new environment to the fore and to ensure their existence in the show to the next level. Through an elimination process, only one contestant will be left standing. The whole ideal behind the show is not only to entertain, but to educate young African women on what it's really like out in the rural communities of Africa."

Angels according to Oleka, hopes "to bring some of these upstarts to the forefront by way of prime-time television while providing an entertaining show for the viewer."Though the programme is due for broadcast soon, the co-ordinator revealed that a broadcast deal is yet to be signed but plans are ripe for the telecast of the show on three prime entertainment television networks and on pay TV/cable network.

He states the primary vision of Angels. "To make Angels the biggest, most enduring ideal African Woman talent hunt show and the most watched television show in Nigeria."The concept and articulation of this show is geared towards the prospects of a general well being, that result from the embrace of a survival idea, opportunity, initiative, enterprises and the inculcation of a holistic African womanhood among our women.

"The 20th century Africa have almost lost her cultural heritage to the great influence and luxury of the Western culture, to bring back the African culture, we decided to take 12 young ladies who are meant to be home keepers "in Africa" from across the country, who also may not have been to the village before, to be groomed by the "ancestors", whose presence is fully felt and their supremacy upheld in and around the home. The program philosophy addresses the Nigeria woman and indeed the entire African women, who presently from the nucleus of primary nation building at the grass root and community level," Oleka submitted.

The purpose of this program, he revealed, is to reposition our young women, to be exceptionally efficient and strategically innovative in the application of their primary roles as homemakers and to promote the use of principles of home breeding, while still preserving their acquired western attributes, and launching its participants into stardom. "Reality shows have become a worldwide phenomenon having been staged in virtually all the continents of the world. Reality TV show came into Nigeria media in 2003 when big Brother Africa was beamed from South Africa and subsequently when the first Nigerian reality TV show The Gulder Ultimate Search was broadcast."

Oleka continued: "In the past half decade, Nigeria television drama has become more violent and sexually explicit and comedy has become edgier, reality TV has also evolved into a genre that many media experts believe presents ever meaner, more competitive, and more hurtful versions of "reality" to an ever-expanding audience. However, many viewers enjoy reality TV. Viewers are tired of seeing bland sitcoms and family dramas on network television and have turned to reality TV for entertainment. Although there are some valid moral objections to reality TV - for example reality TV shows often glorify superficial characteristics such as physical beauty over spiritual strength and thus set a poor example for teenagers, with whom the shows are especially popular."

The Angels, the radio presenter and producer said, is departure from this paradigm offering viewers knowledge of the African culture and virtues using a more subtle contest environment and pure African setting. In Africa today, even in the Diaspora, African touch to Western culture. Angels comes with an entertainment platform with African values and culture to entertain and showcase to the world what a true African woman is and should be."
