The Nigeria Movie Award (NIGMA) that sets out to recognize and reward actors and actresses including those behind the cameras would hold in April.
According to the organizer, Mr. Greg Fiberesima, President, Sylvaline Entertainment, the need to look into the peculiarity of the Nigerian motion picture’s historical development has become pertinent.
In this case, he says, legends of the industry both dead and living will be considered and creative ingenuity injected into low budget effort would also be appraised considering the economy and self-effort of the filmmakers.
He adds that stage plays and television dramas, which have been largely neglected, would be looked into while fashion, photography, costume, make-up and other less obvious but apparently complementary roles in filmmaking, would also be brought to view.
"Emphasis will be placed on those productions, which tend to promote the cultural identity and social relevance of the Nigerian people as much as they also preach unity of our diverse cultural heritage," Fiberesima declares.
The Cross River State government will host the event.
However, the vision of the initiator and host is such that the project will run on its own having being well established on credible ground enough to attract corporate and government support. It will run as the people’s award in order to outlive the ideas of the initiator and tenure of the host governor, His Excellency, Donald Duke and his wife, Onari. The awards initiative is associated with the much talked about Tinapa Business Resort with the maiden edition coming up next month in Calabar.
