Vince Is Right.
Vince said something in a thread about the watchers of Nigerian movies not knowing what they want or not wanting anything different. (Forgive me for not getting the exact phrase) i don't remember which thread.
I was all set to jump down his throat but I got sidetracked.
Then I read the thread on Dancing Hearts and I realized that Vince is correct.
I haven’t seen the movie but it appears to have a different concept, which a lot of people seemed to have trouble with.
One group said it was unrealistic, another group said it is not representative; yet another group didn’t like just because it was, well, different.
And it dawned on me that MOST of us are content with the same old story lines and we will complain about those same story lines and when someone dares to try something different, we take up issue with it.
Like I said, I haven’t seen the movie, and although it’s been given bad reviews here, I will say Kudos to Tchidi Tchikere for attempting something different.
Like someone on the dancing heart thread said: movies are not supposed to be realistic all the time.
Why can’t we just embrace the different and run with it?
(Side bar: I loved the movie bridge stone with RMD and Liz Benson, it was light, funny, not to be taken seriously, but someone on this web board vehemently opposed it. I mean really! How can RMD show his range as an actor if all he does is act as a suave, smooth, polished character in ALL his movies? He was totally completely RAZZ in this movie)
Anyway Vince, you are right, majority of the nollywood fans are not ready for something different, I won’t use the word sophisticated like you did, but we just haven’t gotten to the point where we are ready to broaden our minds and open ourselves up for something different. I think it’s time, but…

How do you expect nollywood fans to have an open-mind when the movie industry, itself, it's not open-minded?
Artistic expression should never be reduced or stopped because a few fans do not like a movie.
As for me, I love all types of movies and I welcome something different but the nollywood industry is to chicken to try something different. Until this industry develop a backbone, we will continue to see the same recycled storylines.

me too, i was surprised that film 'dancing hearts' received so much negative reviews on this site o. i saw it as something rather different and an intelligent concept. but then, like you said, i quess most of 'us' are just used to the evil mother in-laws and girl loving boy stories!

I thought so too. I thought Olu Jacobs did a wonderful job. I felt his pain when she left. He is probably the best actor in nollywood. Now, I wasn't too fond of the dancing but everything else I liked.

iuwa, that would be disastrous for the industry. sometimes i wish that people like tchidi and emem isong and the other directors were active on this site so that we can bounce ideas off them, and also let them know that we applaud their efforts. and they're rich enough that they can afford to be choosy and not conform. And Olu Jacobs is a veteran!! he is in a league all his own, short and simple.

omonaija, nne, its time to move on from those movies. as much as i love watching Patience O in action, i'd like even better to see her in something different, sort of like she did in Love After Love.
chi, we are in the minority.

I am not sure if it is a matter of people not knowing what they want. It is more a matter of diffferent strokes for different folks and the industry will cater to the taste of the majority as the law of economics dictates and that majority might or might not be represented on this board.
Having said that, I loved Bridgestone, RMD and Liz were wonderful in it. I also loved the idea behind Dancing heart, the age difference was not even an issue, but the concept of a writer using his wife and her escapades to unblock his writer's block was quite cool and innovative. I remember the thought briefly crossing my mind that, the idea was not very African, (nor is it very much of any other culture worldwide for that matter). It takes a certain mindset to think of such a plan for the furtherance of their art, but it did not stop me from enjoying the movie. I will see what I think of Shut in when I get it, although the previews I have seen makes me believe, it will be a movie I will be thinking about for a long time.

I agree that Dancing Heart was creative, and very good. I was also surprised by the comments from people.

Let me go and re-read the comments, and rewatch the movie. i get am for house.
Seriously though, from what I remember the concept was good but not well executed and even when you are exploring new frontiers you still have to maintain some "believity" if you get my drift. And I think thats what where most people had a problem with it
