Thumbs up Nollywood: What are they doing right?

Tell the producers.
It is also good to let them know that there are things that they are doing that you think is right on the money.
This is also a form of helpful feedback.

This is an extension of the "Tell the producers" thread.

They get some things right definitely!

Telling the nigerian story through nigerians, and never loosing the essence of that (most of the time that is). Its engaging, regardless of the flaws! You can always relate to certain scenes so well!

Kudos to Nollywood.

I love lots of things they do, but it is mostly in the story they tell.

Traditional village homvies:, showcasing our traditional stories, putting us in traditional clothes, decorating us in with traditional makeup, having us dance in traditional ways to traditional songs (e.g My father's love, Royal package, only love, royal palace, etc, etc). I love our traditional stories because it is very uniquely African and can't be duplicated by any other culture because it isn't any where else. It is wonderful to be able to see the bygone eras of Nigeria/African stories on films and be able to own copies for posterity. Our ancestors's verbal stories are finally coming to life, looking forward to seeing more and more of them.

Romance stories: Telling African or Nigerian romance from the African view, even showing the confusion or assimilation as we blend the Nigerian ideas with the westernized ways we are adopting into our world. The battles between the generation and the changing ideas of love/relationships that creates the battles.

Drama: Telling African stories that showcase our very African traditions and ideas. The wine-carrying, the dowries, the roles of husband and wifes, the respect of the elders. Why and when men kneel before their wives and why and when wives kneel before their husbands. When children argue and fight their parents and why they do.

The idioms, sayings, wisdoms of the elders, proverbs, peoms, etc that pepper our movies, spoken by the young and the old. It does not matter whether they are in the village or in the cities.
the Lion is the lion, his tails, is his tail,
the serpent strikes just the same, and it is a clear warning to all,
the stubborn fly will surely follow the corpse to the grave,
the flower in our in-laws garden are to be cherished, loved and married,
our wife, is our wife even before the wedding,
our in-laws, are our in-laws when the relationship is understood,
and all so very, very Nigerian

Pidgin english, proper english and the local dialects: there is nothing like showing that we grow up bi/tri or morelingua, when a sophisticated, intelligent, well-bred adult goes back and forth between proper english and pidgin (and sometimes their native dialect) like one was born to it.

A different view of Nigeria or Africa: If one lives abroad the tendency is to think that Africa is always on the verge of dying from starvation, famine, something or the other. But see the movies and suddenly there is a different view of the life of an African. Yes, there are road, rich homes and laughter.

Most importantly because this is not 419, corruption, robbery or drugs... For carrying the flag on a positive trend and allowing naija's hold their head high for something good. Una well done. And this is bigger than you all and Nollywood.

I am sure there is more I can come up with and I will update as I remember. Meanwhile Kudos Nollywood.

Una dey try

For attempting and telling our stories in spite of the constraints you face - financial, lack of govt. support etc.

For showcasing Nigeria, nay Africa to the world, who only sees AIDS, starvation, etc as 'Africa'

For providing employment and an avenue for people to achieve their dreams, express their talent, etc

For keeping our home alive in our hearts (those of us in the diaspora) and for giving us an avenue to keep it alive in the hearts of our children.

Una dey try, keep it up and push yourselves further!

The music in village movies are very entertaining and sometime i even look for that track to buy!

The Lighting is ok, not that perfect though

The costumes for village movies are good....

The dialogue is getting better...

I was getting so sick and tired of seeing movies about the Yoruba/Igbo/Hausa culture so I am very, very, very happy to see movies showcasing other tribes. It's not great all the time (e.g The Queen feat. Stella Damasus Aboderin/Richard Mofe Damijo/Nkiru Sylvanus) because the actors don't invest the time to learn a little about the tribe and just assume that all tribes are the same BUT it is still lovely to behold.

I am loving that we are showing ourselves in a romantic light even though it is yet to sit right because the actors are a bit stiff but it's lovely to see sweetness between couples especially the older generation who are notorious for their "dryness", e.g Love After Love feat. Justus Esiri and Patience Ozokwor.

I am hearing more and more music made, produced and song by Nigerians.

I am seeing less occult themed movies so that's superb

Love the way they show women of all different shapes in Naija movies. We don't get this variety in hollywood.

Love the way they are doing the women's makeup now. Before most of the actresses had pimples but now I rarely see pimples/acne in these movies.

I no longer see women with pantyline issues in Naija movies, this is a good sign that better things are yet to come.

1.) For some of the biggest laughs I have ever had aka Ukwa, Omugwo, one dollar............Thank you sooo much. Some of the comedies are sensational.

ehmmmm........ geez this is hard..

2.) Thank you for sometimes giving me ideas of styles of traditional attires to sew through the sometimes nice display of traditional clothes (note how the emphasis is on sometimes) in the movies..............Or should I be thanking Ovation.........I forget...

ehmmmm.........Actually that's all I've got... half bread dey say is better than kpomo

I agree , no hollywood size standard for our stars. Totally unrealistic...

Some of the ladies have great sense of style. It is great to keep dressing them as lovely as they are currently protrayed, e.g. Rita Dominic. Dakore Egbuson, Genevieve Nnaji's and Omotola in Queen of Hasso rock was quite incredibly looking.

My dear, You know that's right. I honestly want to see Nigerian movies do better. Believe me I do, it's a thing of pride to pack all your oyibo/akata heck even American born Nigerian friends and show off Naija movies to them, but alas that is sooooooo not the case....

And Naija movies are synonymous with a friend on crack........You stand by them, praying, wishing they get better, every time you have all your hopes up that this time is it!! they are good to go, they only swindle you for your money and get worse! till the point where you cant take it anymore and you order them outta your life and see that it stays that way

Btw, I knew that Mama Veronica's kpomo was up to no good and dem come dey tell me sey na how kpomo dey taste!! make I catch dem next time na
