THANK YOU!!!! I have seen quiet a few where I didn't even have to touch my remote once to lower or raise the volume accordingly - the music fades in and out and I can hear the characters speaking.

BB,
I have been thinking about the highlighted below for some days now, and its interesting you brought it up....
I mean, when will the comparisons, subtle or not, stop? What is sooo wrong in watching some of these "EMG" flicks and not cringing at the near TOTAL emulation of Western culture to the point that its an overkill?? I'm not saying our movies should be in local dialects alone, or that we should speak or potray characters in a way that isnt true in the 21st century.
My point is that when you have a goal you want to reach, a point in the industry you're striving to get to, you take the goods along with what is bad. You dont just take EVERYTHING that is "western" and throw your name on it and call it Nollywood, it wont work. There are sooo soo many samples of how the movie makers do that these days...
- Dressing - we have now begun dressing our college girls like whores and prostitutes in movies...Grant it, these things exist in the universities back at home, but EVERY movie I see involving college women shouldnt center around one girl barely dressed with overkill wig and nails the length of pencils!
- Smoking - yea yea yea, to each its own, but lately, some of our beloved actors have started lighting up on set, and it makes me wonder if what they are smoking is real or not...
- Food, music, the names of characters, even story lines sef, accents...etc....Speaking of accents, WHY WHY WHY is it that someone who has barely stepped foot abroad constantly FAKES Their accents in movies WHY??? Yes I know its a movie, and you have to speak in a way that you'll be understood, however, 95% of the time, its overkill and those we're trying to copy know it !!!
I have said it over and over again on this forum that to call this industry "nollywood", we must remove that TIGHT mask of how we think things are done in the "West", do our own thing, do it well, and others will take note.
BB why did you make me write all this ehn?? Back to work!

IF they were waiting for that then they will NOT have gone anywhere in the first place and as a people we are go getters even if we go about it the wrong way. And I really do wish people like you will find other adages besides "Rome Was Not Built In A Day," that statement is so redundant I can't take it. Nollywood causes itself to be compared to Hollywood when they start copying Hollywood, Western ideals and the can't do it properly. They bring about the comparisons. And noone is saying they should be on the same level but some of the issues they are still struggling with are issues that should have been resolves a long while ago. After TEN YEARS why am I still raising and lowering the volume on my remote control? Even the old films in Hollywood didn't have that problem even if it was black/white and silent films...the music still played at the appropriate levels. I am a huge fan of the Golden Age of Hollywood and yes some of my favorite actors are from the
20s, 30s, 40s - and I would still rather watch those than watch some of Nollywood drivel...yes, ma'am - I'd rather watch Mary Pitford, Rosaline Russell, Bette Davis, Spenser Tracy, Ernest Borgine, James Cagney, Cary Grant anyday than watch Emeka Ike, Mike Ezerounye, Tony Umez, Bob Manuel Udokwu, Fred Aseroma, Mona Lisa Chinda etc.

We will collectively stop watching and stop pointing out the changes that we wish to see once you start buying the films for us OR you can stop telling us what to do with our opinions and remain satisfied with the status quo. This forum is a space for open discussion and we will all not be happy with everyone's opinions. If you don't like what is posted then don't read them.

Is it not strange that members of a forum for lovers of Nigerian movies would express their opinion about quality which,is obviously affecting their common love-Nollywood movies-and you call it jargon?Whatever happened to individual differences?BB answered you very well so,learn to accomodate variety of opinions please.

The problem with most nigerians is that they wait for the White man's approval, ONLY the white man can give a stamp of approval. Nollywood is 10 years old, comparing it to an established industry is not appropriate. ROME WAS NOT BUILT IN A DAY. You need to give credit to those who've decided to stay back home and build an industry that is now employing hundreds if not thousands who would otherwise have no job. Try to watch some hollywood movies made in the 20s and 30s. U'll get my point. I get infuriated when people like u who stay in states criticize effort made by others back home. They are trying, Years from now there will be a difference. I hate when people who don't know behave like they are pros. if it is that easy, why don't u go over and reform it.
|
Yeah right....whatever.....people like you are quick to say don't compare but our movies have borrowed cultures from the same hollywood. If we are just 10yrs old then we should remain in the jungle and wait for the next 70yrs to improve on things. Like I've said before, hollywood did not have access to the same equipment they have access to now but this is 2007 and we do so what's your excuse now. Forget quality self, 99% movies are stupid and it makes you wonder if the movies are made for illiterates.....what am I saying self, an illiterate will tell you the movies suck too.

You better disable your username 'cos is seems as if you've lost the concept of one the reasons why this site was created by Oga Sola because I'm quite sure its definitely not for us to suck up to movies that are bad.

Now I get your point, if I had read this i wouldn't have even made a comment at all.......you just need a place to let people know what you think hollywood feels about whoever....your grieves has nothing to do with the quality aspect of nollywood but how hollywood feels about you shio....
In that case o, I hope you hang up your jeans and wear ibante for eternity.

@ Uyai
I have not been on this forum for long however, I do get the feeling that most of the people here love Naija movies but are not afraid to challenge/ criticise them when they are rubbish. For myself I make criticisms because I want to see an improvement.
Everybody has a God given talent: some people could be movie producers, directors, script writers actors etc. I know that mine is being a damned good couch potato when I get a chance to i.e. when I am not at work. Therefore, I require some entertainment when I am doing this thing that I have become so good at. This is where Naija movies come in.
In all my years of watching Naija movies, I have seen some good ones but a good majority have quite frankly been pretty crap! I know one might say "why bother watching them if you feel this way?". My answer to that is what is a couch potato like me to do? I am already addicted to watching them and I really can't be bothered at the mo to find something else to pass the time
