    Who is your enemy?

Many times i hear people talking about thier 'enemies' and wishing them evil. Infact if you go to some churches, in a 3 hour service they'll use 2hours to pray against thier enemies. 'My enemy must die!die! die! die!...' With images of thier step-mother or thier next-door neighbour who they had a minor argument with last week in thier heads!

I cant say i'm a real bible scholar o, but from my own interpretation of the bible, I beleive my own enemy is the devil, shebi na bible talk say 'for we wrestle not against flesh and blood...'

So my question is, who is your enemy? Do we really have enemies aside from the devil? Should we curse them or pray for them? Now, i'm asking from a strictly religious point of view, and please religion is not limited to just christianity. I am particularly interested in learning the buddist point of view on this.
    Obrigada!

All those things (could be people, sometimes) that keep or prevent us from doing the will of God are our enemies.

The flesh is number one in my opinion. We are constantly bombarded with things that could make us deviate from God.

The devil is also our enemy and he uses our flesh and even people close to us to try and divert our attention away from God, therefore making us perilously close to missing the will of God for our lives.

The problem is that some people think it is their mum-in law or mama elede, or that mama oniyo or the fair-skinned woman accross the street that is doing them!

While not dismissing the fact that some people could know for definite who their enemies are E.g. their father's other wife etc.

But whomever people think their enemy is could determine the type of prayer they pray. They may want to adopt a pray-for-and love-your-enemy kind of attitude. Or they may decide to recite Psalm 59 on a daily basis. You know the crucial one David recited from the heart when the battle was raging all around him.

They may choose to recite this Psalm on a daily at 12 midnite and/or 3am on a daily basis. When, we are told the 'enemies' are usually at work!! (Lord have mercy!)

Okay, that's my sermon for the day.

    Regards from Pastor Tiron.

Please educate us.....knowing their belief(s) could possibly make us tolerate each other more..... i think....

well my late aunt was a buddhist and i can still remember her saying that her religion does not permit her to make enemies or keep grudges and that as a buddhist what u wish ur fellow human comes back to u via the law of karma.
i guess this sums up that they dont see human beings as enemies !

i cud be wrong, pls anyone whose one shud tell me if this a nail on the head or not.

That's right! Human beings have no enemy aside satan and his spiritual hosts and agents. The believers in Christ Jesus are required to deliver every human satanic agent from the kingdom of darkness, but many would rather have them dead.

I personally dont know who my enemies are but i do know that i love them all and the same. this may sound like some doctor phil ish but men im tired of hating them...biko! Life is short people are dying, wars are going on why should i sit and worry wether youre my enemy....let them be my guest!!

But i must say that some enemies are not to be confused with honest friends....those that hurt you but do it in your best interest and we tend to label them as enemies...

for me i think hating me or saying stuff bout me is like being my propeller on a sea plane....

    Yeah. That beats me!!

I was arguing with a leader in a Mountain of Fire and Miracles Church here my aunty was trying to drag me into on why they pray die die die for their enemies! because my church Redeemed Christian Church of God dont pray that way!!! We pray for everyone to live and repent and get salvation, and not to die! Haba! Isnt dying extreme?! Time they should use to praise and worship God, some churches dedicate to 'killing' their enemies!

And I refer to this verse in the bible a lot:
"Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of my enemies..."
    Ps 23:5.

If there is no enemy, how can there be a table prepared? Huh?

That may explain why their enemies have yet to die; or if enemies die indeed, why repeat such prayer?

SPIRIT BEINGS DON'T DIE and it's equally wrong to pray that human beings should die.

Thanks a mil for this. This idea of invoking holy ghost fire on the head of supposed enemies is one thing that annoys me so much about some Pentecostal churches. I refuse to pray such prayers because growing up as a child in the Anglican church, I was taught to pray for my enemies, for God to touch their hearts and for them to be brought to the light and receive God's forgiveness.

All this MFM, Lords Chosen and even some Redeemed parishes calling holy ghost fire and thunder on the head of enemies reminds me of Okija shrine. Our people used to go babalawo and dibia to invoke thunder on the head of enemies. Today, we go to church to invoke holy ghost fire.

The scripture passage you quoted above should be put in its right context if it's to be rightly understood. By definition, an enemy is one who's actively hostile to another, according to Oxford Dictionary. Sometimes, we may be unable to help being someone else's enemy, due to no fault of ours. In such an instance, while you may harbour no ill-feelings or intentions toward the hostile party, you wouldn't call such a person a friend [knowing fully well that he/she could potentially harm you], would you? Therefore, if you were addressing such a one, in the third person, you might simply want to refer to him/her as an enemy, even though that person really isn't YOUR enemy, in the strict/literal sense of the word. Christ himself adopted and endorsed the contextual use of this figure of speech in his Matthew 6:44 admonition that Christians are to strive to love/pray for/bless their enemies and persecutors. The above scripture [psalm 23:5] should also be put in a similar context.

Interesting and illuminating comments all round. Thanks to all contributors.

Can I just add that I think most of the time WE are our own worst enemy for many reasons. But I will look at it from a Believer in Christ' point of view.

When we are drawn away from God by our own desires, when we are enticed by sinful deeds and thoughts therefore allowing sin to fester. And we know how God feels and what he says about that, don't we?

Secondly, sometimes, when we are going through trials, we shout that it is the work of the enemy and accuse this person or that person for being the cause of 'em. We forget that we will all go through various trials. God never said we wouldn't. James 1, 1-16 says more about this. Trials test our faith and produces patience. God says we should count it a joy when we fall into trials. Easier said than done, I know!

Those who invoke holy ghost fire on their "enemies" need to be extremely careful for they could inadvertently be invoking it on themselves. But thank God for his mercy and grace.

And I feel for those who get stuck in shouting, Oh! My enemies! My enemies are at it again oo..! whenever any slight thing start to go wrong. If you are a true believer and a King/Queen of God's Kingdom, you shouldn't worry about some faceless enemies.

Sorry o Bluestocking. I know you didn't want this limited to just Christian views. But considering that NR members are predominantly Christians and Muslims then views other than those aforementioned could be limited.

The same people that called us idol worshippers b'cos we practice stuffs like - masquarade (sp), earth and tree worship etc are today doing exactly those same things. We now have earth day in the US, tree huggers, animal worshippers, if you go to Disneyland you'd find masquarades in all shapes and sizes~ His Majesty

From what everybody has said, it looks likes the general consensus is that the devil is the enemy, even though he uses people and he uses the flesh, but he is the enemy. Now, if the the devil is the enemy, and not people who are under the control of the devil, would it be proper to curse such people? I mean arent they under the influence of a power that is stronger than they are? Would it not be better to pray for them?

It looks like this discussion is turning into a christian one, if there are any other religions on this board, please i would still like to hear your views?
