In the small, neat home she shares with a husband she describes as a broken man, Mally Simelane talks about her daughter, Eudy, who two years ago was gang-raped and stabbed to death.

"These children are ours," she says, her hands folded across her kitchen table. "The gays and lesbians. I mean, we must accept our children. What they like, it's up to them. We are not God to stop them."
But there are those who are trying to stop them. And to punish them. To scare them. To change them. To "correct" them.
At the time of her murder, Eudy Simelane was almost a decade removed from her career on the South African women's national soccer team. But at 31, she had become a well-respected youth coach, a passionate ambassador for the game she loved. Everyone knew she was gay.
At Eudy's grave -- not far from the creek where her tormentors dumped her mutilated corpse -- Mally says, "I look at her picture. Then pray. Cry. Talk to her. Telling her, 'I miss you.'"
The rationale?
For an act of such violence and malice, it's called something so clinical: "corrective rape."
"The phenomenon of corrective rape is based on the mistaken belief that through the violent act of rape, you can alter someone's orientation, you can alter their identity," says Jody Kollapen, the former chairman of the South African Human Rights Commission, a governmental organization. "The rationale would be that a woman who chooses to be lesbian has surely not had a relationship with a man, and therefore, if she has a relationship with a man, even if it's a violent, forced one, that will surely convince her that the lifestyle she chose is inappropriate."

Sometimes, as in the case of Eudy Simelane, the perpetrators of corrective rape are interested less in changing their victims than in eradicating them and sending a message to other South African lesbians, who, recent studies show, live in a heightened state of fear -- with good reason.
In the country with the most reported rapes per capita in the world, where it is estimated that nearly half of all women will be raped, so-called corrective rape represents only a fraction of the sexual assaults committed. The exact numbers are impossible to determine -- in part because South Africa has no hate-crime laws that would require authorities to classify corrective rapes separately from other rapes -- but, according to the Human Rights Commission, it is a growing phenomenon. The anecdotal evidence is overwhelming; for instance, the Triangle Project, a gay and lesbian advocacy organization, says it is dealing with 10 new cases of corrective rape every week in Cape Town alone.
A disproportionate number of female athletes have been victims, if only because more are openly gay as Simelane was. On paper, South Africa is among the world's most progressive countries; its constitution emphasizes the rights of the individual, and gay marriage is legal. But South Africa's constitutional aspirations run up hard against certain realities. Before his election, President Jacob Zuma was tried for raping (not corrective rape) an 18-year-old family acquaintance. He was acquitted, but his attitudes about gay marriage -- which he has condemned -- and gays and lesbians in general reflect the prejudices of many of his constituents.
"When I was growing up, [a homosexual] would not have stood in front of me," Zuma said. "I would knock him out."

Its truly Sad sid...I know they are true stories but the fact they are coming to light now is a little suspicious....on the account of the forthcoming world cup...These are athletes women who play soccer since when did soccer start sexual bias? South Africa is not f'ed its the people who control it and condone such type behavior that are f'ed up. I can bet you its not just athletes that are getting attacked every day people too.. I am heterosexual but i dont see why we all cant just coexist This has been going on for years....they closed eye why open it now?

DD, i see ur point, but i guess as the spotlight is on southAfrica, both the good and bad will be shown, i had heard about this before, what baffles me is the idea that somehow these girls will be corrected because they now know what a man "feels" like, it is disgusting! Really, like my dad would say "is that how your brain works", is that how their brain works, well if they were gay,now they will be just gayer! Friggin idiots! and this is odd, since southafrica recognizes gay marriages! But like the guy said this happens in predominantly black townships, really our people need to get educated that "RAPE IS RAPE" it can never be anyother way, and quite frankly this is disgusting...eww, i remember in my school here in yankee it happened at a party off campus, where some guys gang raped a girl because she was gay, Gosh! Thinking along the same line. Shouldn't the response have been, “America is Fckeud up*** period”, instead of the subtle response "eww and disgusting"? Don't you think the US of A or Great Britain would be up in arms if the world media was splashing a similar story about them and there a was a major sports event being hosted by either of the two nations? I don't condone the rape of anyone, but there are worse sexual crimes committed in the so called developed world, yet we all ignore those facts and still break our necks to live and visit those nations.

Homosexuals were left alone when they stayed in their closets. People should learn to keep their sex lives in their bedrooms. Nobody wants to know whether you're gay or lesbian. You never see heterosexuals advertizing their sex lives.

Wow, lets analyze this His Majesty, movies, tv show, books, everything else out there advertizes heterosexual sex lives, i think that the reason why homosexuality is now at the forefront and maybe why you think they are advertising their sex lives is because now they are excercising their rights, the right to marry even at that they are not advertizing their sex lives, heterosexuality is a norm that is why no one comes out and says "I'm Straight' Gay people have to come out and say that they are gay in order to make sure they are not forced into what the rest of society considers normal. I'm sure that if Stay-at-home dads came out and said they were stay-at-home dads, you might have the same reaction, and i dont see how they are advertising their sex lives, what i see here is letting the public know that people lie this do exist, the heterosexual normalcy that was guard before is no longer what it is, Nollywood, Hollywood, love stories, Disney, everything else out there promotes the idea that every woman needs a man, a knight is shining armor, the Ghanaian fcukfest movies coming out these days advertize heterosexual sex in the diritest of ways, pornograpy, like Sifu said? With all due respect, Nike, because you're totally entitled to your opinion, you're trying to present homosexuality as if it's a natural/normal lifestyle on par with heterosexuality. That's probably where you and I disagree. Are you aware that, to this day, there are still laws in the books against sodomy? And I am talking about here in the United States of America not just in Africa or Asia.
My point remains that homosexuality did not become a hot buttom issue until the proponents started shoving the issue in the face of the public. Once the gay community started trying to get grade schools to use "Yolanda has two mommies" it became a problem. Now we are confrotned with a steady drumbeat that we are all homophobic for not allowing homosexuals to have the same marriage rights as heterosexuals. The biggest problem I have with the gay community is that they want the rest of us to accept them as normal. they will not quit shoving their agenda in our faces until they get everything they want. they demand that we accept them as members in good standing in our church, even as pastors in the pulpit. we must allow them to teach our kids in the kindergarten and grade schools, and we must grant them freedom to teach our kids that our religious views are bigoted. we muist accept and tolerate not only basic homo/bisexuals but also transgenders and transsexuals.
the point of the matter is, homosexuals are not looking for equal rights, they are seeking special privileges. take the issue of gays in the military for instance, the general rule for everybody is "don't ask, don't tell." What does that mean? It means 'keep your freaking sex life to yourself (private). no one is gonna ask about your sexual orientation, and you are not obligated to tell anyone either.'
now, tell me what's wrong with that fair policy? but, hey, that's not good enuff for the gay community, they must wear it on their chin and flaunt their sex lives in the noses of everybody! I am appalled by the amount of resources devoted to promoting a deviant behavior like homosexuality. Theyt are even trying to use pseudo science and doctored research to legitimize it.
Here is the homosexual agenda. homosexual activits want to change society. They are striving to:
1. have homosexuality normalized by the medical community
2. desensitize the public to homosexuality
3. present homosexuality as normal
3. Establish homosexuals as a legal, legitimate minority grp
4. Gain public sympathy for homosexuals
5. redefine the family to include homosexual relationships
6. demonize anybody that dares says anything -ive against homosexuality

I think that homosexuality is normal and homosexuals should be treated as such
You think that homosexuality is not normal and they are asking for special rights.
So there is no need to try to see reason either way, my beliefs and yours are different.
