How I landed Kanu Nwankwo’s wedding contract

The wedding is long over, as celebration has equally waned. And the marriage, perhaps in the same vein is being diligently consumated. But the goodwill seems to be catching on ceaselessly.
While some established fraternity during the event of Kanu Nwankwo’s celebrated marriage to Amarachi, others, by their roles, are still smiling their way to the banks.
Belonging to the latter, however, is Evangelist (Mrs.) Jane Alex Ekubo, Managing Director of Jalex Creations, the fashion outfit that designed the attire for the ex-Arsenal player’s traditional wedding.
Disclosing in an interview with Sunday Sun how she got the deal for the making of the dress in her office at 5, Onikoyi Street, Surulere, Lagos, Ekubo attributed it to divine intervention. While not quantifying her gains in monetary terms alone, Ekubo said she is now “richer and more comfortable, as she is witnessing increased patronage from people as a result of being the designer of Kanu’s traditional dress.
Revealing to Sunday Sun how she got the link, she said: “It was on a Tuesday, when a call came from one Mrs. Onyeador, who introduced her self as Amarachee’s mother. She said they were coming to see me. And shortly after, she walked in with a young pretty girl, who I later discovered to be Amarachee and we struck the deal.”
Ekubo who said she had neither met Kanu nor Amarachee before that fateful encounter, further added: “Actually someone recommended me to them and I would say without mincing words that it was divine connection. I have never met Kanu nor Amarachee before, but lo and behold, there, they were before me in my shop and we struck the deal,” she hinted graciously.
On whether the deal has actually altered her clientele qualitatively, Ekubo beamed with satisfaction: “Oh, people have been rushing here because they want to identify with Kanu. Infact, I have done a lot of native wears for them,” adding that, “Just this morning, someone called to find out if I was the one that designed Kanu’s traditional wears, and I said yes. So it is spreading like wild fire and I give God the glory.”
A graduate of Business Administration, Evangelist Ekubo said opting for a career in fashion designing gives her joy because it was something she had long dreamed of while growing up.
“As far bask as my secondary school days, a friend told me about making an attire, I advised her on colour combination and how to go about sewing it. So, way back, people were coming to me for advice on what to wear, it is inborn and a gift,” she boasted.
Her outfit, Jalex Creations, coined from Jane and Alex also attracts customers from broad spectums, both onshore and offshore. “Most of my customers are based in U.S. and London and they have confidence in what Jalex Creations is doing for them.
“We have infact gone international. Merchants come in from overseas and buy our wears to resell abroad,” she exhaled.
Taking a long look at the fashion business in Nigeria, Ekubo said: “While growing up in the early 80’s, people went for ready-made dresses and mostly English wears but time has long changed, as a lot of people now go for traditional attires, thereby promoting our cultural heritage.”
