Finally sat down to watch the DVD. Its okay. Over-acted, under-directed, with a couple of actors notorious for having only one expression for sadness, joy, anger, etc. The ladies like this kind of stuff cos it will make them cry, but for me, the concept is under-written and under-milked. The supporting characters mostly have no meat on their bones. They just seem to pop-up and push the story down the next path. The ending fails for me, but the fact remains that in today's Nigeria, there really is no "proper" way to resolve the story, considering customary laws still hold so much weight. Stella was stellar. Molube was Molube. Solade was so-so. Buonor was Buonor. The kids were flat. It looked like a rushed project to me. For me, the shots were always insufficient in the important scenes like where the women scraped Stella character's hair in the village night.
There was a nice boob-flash when Nnena (Stella) had to walk naked to the river (a freeze-frame moment for the guys! ). Watch it. It depicts aspects of our culture that we need to excise fast.

Wow, not to good but I will get it. I read that it got a standing ovation when it premiered in Lagos but then again small things always impress us.

The movie does attest to the fact that Ogoro is one of the few directors doing interesting things. I actually think that the scene with the village women was beautifully executed.
However, apart from the fact that the beginning of the movie dragged on tool long and was rather badly written, my major concern with the movie is its hyper-religious tone. Abusive widowhood rites are serious social issues and i would liked to see a much more secular engagement of the issue. Besides, leaving her salvation to chance and attributing it to God leaves out the possiblity for social change. This is also compounded by the gospel of patience and passivity promoted in the movie. I could go on and on. Compared to "Prostitute," "Widow" is a far less careful handling of social problems affecting women.

It's an okay movie but didn't like the ending.
Stella as ususal pulled her character off like nobody's business. Kudos to her.
