Drama as Emeka Ike emerges New Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) President
By Benjamin NJOKU & Bridget AMARAEGBU

A mild drama ensued on Monday at the secretariat of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, AGN, in Surulere area of Lagos, when embattled Segun Arinze’s attempt to halt the care-taker-committee of the guild from conducting a counter-election that produced actor Emeka Ike as the new president of the guild hit a brick wall.

Arinze last month was appointed to head the alleged government of national unity set up by the Ifeanyi Dike- led Board of Trustees of the guild, with Emeka Ike as his vice as a way of moving the troubled guild forward.

He allegedly stormed the guild’s secretariat with a team of policemen from Area D, Mushin, with an intention of stopping the election. However, he failed as the Kanayo O. Kanayo led- interim government, armed with a court order, refused to be intimidated as they went ahead to conduct the election.

In a court order dated 13th of June, 2009, and which was shown to the policemen that came with Arinze, the caretaker committee exercised the power confined on it to conduct a general election for the guild.

It would be recalled however that Mr. Arinze recently emerged president of the guild in a controversial election conducted by the erstwhile president of the guild, Ejike Asiegbu in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State capital.

He was disowned by the Lagos State chapter of the body, which described his election as a “sham”, labelling him a non-registered member of the chapter. Ike’s election is bound to trigger off another round of crisis within the guild.

Before the election, which was endorsed by all state chairmen and delegates of the guild, Emeka Ike had described Segun Arinze as a ‘joker’, adding that, “Segun is not AGN president and he cannot be one. Constitutionally, he is not eligible to be a president because I learnt he is not a degree holder and not even a card carrying member.

“You can ask him to present his certificate the same way I’m ready to present mine any time. What he is doing is just a waste of time because the real election is what we have just conducted today.”

The spokesperson of the guild’s interim national government, Charles Okafor, once noted that “the priority of this interim leadership headed by Kanayo O. Kanayo has a mandate to conduct a credible election that would usher in a new president and executives of AGN, and nothing will change it.

The election will definitely hold.”

He added that with the support of AGN members in the country, all hands have been on deck to conduct a free and fair elections.

Elected alongside Ike were Mr. Femi Durojiaye, (National Secretary), Mohammed Odoko, (vice-president, North Central), Sanni Mohammed(vice-president, North east)Yusuf Bako Mohammed, (vice-president, South-South), Nkiru Sylvanus(vice-presidet, South-East) and Victor Edogun(vice-president, South-West).

Others were, Benita Nzeribe(PRO), Ngozi Onoka(D.G.S), Azi Oliver Akalugu(Finance Secretary), St. Maradona N. Johnson(Treasurer) and Amniu Abdaulla Tafia, who clinched the position of Assistant secretary.

Are you kidding me?! LOL!!! OMG... This country will never progress when simple organizations, like this, can't conduct simple elections...

...damn right...its nursery school's tale by moonlight...

...AGN still has a lotta miles to go to mature...how did segun get there in the first place?...it was by rigimo...why did dike ask for government of unity?...it was to put his man in as the treasurer!...to do this the "elected" treasurer had to step down by force and is headed for the courts...if you know dike personally you would have asked what type of organisation could have accommodated him as BOT chairman in the first place...

...now to the new "election"...i don't understand what nike means by contribution to the industry...using her expression...what the friggin frack has mercy johnson or many of the well-known "stars" done selflessly for nollywood?...at least nkiru was a well-known face before many of them...and apart from knowing their faces what exactly have they done for the industry other than the notoriety of some of them?...i love this new "election" for its nuisance value...let each side flex its muscles till some commonsense comes along...i applaud emeka ike for spending his personal money to finance the nursery school drama...may be in the end the relevant ministry will wake up to its duty...to cancel all the iwu-type of elections and organise a more realistic one!...

I think Segun Arinze should just leave it alone. What is the point of fighting agberos over this. I am disappointed at KOK's involvement though. What is his issue with Segun Arinze? Emeka Ike has always struck me as a thuggish agbero anyway do we should expect this from him

thank you!
mr arinze runs circles around He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named-I with his hands tied behind his back and one eye closed in ANY role.

i hate to break it to ike but he (ike) is not really a good actor, but mr arinze IS a good actor and has proved his mettle with his various roles.

i am truly and thorougly disgusted with this whole AGN issue, and mr arinze should remove himself post-haste from this and let them run the show, then when they have destroyed it, he and other like minded individuals can now build it back up.

disgusting. :056:

...so lets hand it back to ejike with an apology for daring to cause him discomfort!...

...the problem with these people is that most of them never worked in well structured environment before joining the nollywood bandwagon...they became stars through their natural endowments rather than by merit or promotion at structured work...and the industry they joined is itself relatively an infant in terms of organisation...

...like emeka ike, segun arinze is also an agbero...he went to one hotel earlier this year with a friend like a thug to collect money said to be owed to him...and ended up being arrested by the police...

...and if AGN constitution states that the president must be a graduate,so must he be...otherwise it should be repealed as required by an appropriate quorum to legalise segun's "election"...but till then that is the existing requirement and those who are opposed to him on that basis can not be said to be wrong...it does not matter how much of his big eyes he is prepared to sacrifice for AGN...

thank you luce.
re: highlighted, i just realized (after reading through ike's statements properly) that it is in their constitution that you must be a degree holder to be president. i didn't realize that mr arinze is not a degree holder.

the whole situation is still disgusting to me though.

...perhaps all graduates from nigerian universities were in cults, bribed lecturers or slept their ways through...isn't it?...

sometimes i wonder why we are so abusive!...if you don't agree with the stipulation of a graduate in AGN constitution,fine...but why indicate that it can only produce a flawed graduate?...that definitely is flawed logic itself...are those doctors and nurses who come to the U.S and get readily absorbed into the system not from the same universities?....
